Return of Blackened and Other Shenanigans

Post by incubus2432 »

It's a rather long story but my Laredo has been in the shop for some time awaiting a 5 string conversion and I finally had it returned to me just as it was when I shipped it. Once I got it all wired and strung up I was instantly struck by everything I missed about it......the feel, playability and the massive selection of usable tones. I always say my LK is my favorite but......

BTW.....in December it is slated to go out again to be returned to "plain" JetGlo (fretboard and all) once again.

Thanks y'all and sorry if the pics are stirring up cravings Chris.

Woody.....I'm not a fan of gold hardware with painted Rics The wear, to me, just ruins the whole look. I have grown to like it on my LK however......I'm not sure exactly why. Maybe on a Cii like my trans green once the hardware starts looking worn it makes the whole bass look tattered where on the LK (or my old Ci) the worn hardware just looks worn and doesn't, again IMO, detract from the rest of the bass. Or maybe I'm a lunatic. 8)

I upgraded from a 3g as well and am very pleased.....so much faster, the camera is great, screen is sharper, navigation apps finally work properly and the virtual assistant (Siri) has actually proven quite useful.

Funny that you mention the countertop.....that is, basically, my sole contribution to the interior decor or our house. It's a log house and the countertop offsets all of the surrounding wood and lets us get away with a more modern looking kitchen that doesn't look out of place. We'll see if my wife will sign off on my slate tiled with stainless steel fixtured bathroom project (going for "dungeon prison cell" chic).

I'm not a fan of gold hardware either but the way everything blends on your LK works very nicely. Same with the Larado - both guitars look beautiful and the hardware fits with the colorings. Someone has a nice eye for design. :)

BTW, what kind of pups are on the Cii/5?

The pickups in the Cii/5 are Barts......not sure of the specific model. They sound good....strong response from low to high and very clean. Very neutral in tone. While I do think that it sounds nice I'm after a little more grunt so I'm swapping to Nordstrand Big Splits in December when it goes under the knife for some other work.

Absolutely gorgeous collection of Rickenbacker's in your stable, brother!! Oh, how I'd love to add a 5 string to my arsenal!! I've never seen one in person, only in fotos, so I'm not sure how I'd like it since some say spacing on the neck is a little tight.

The spacing on a 4003s5 is a little tight. On the 4004Cii/5 the spacing is fine.......in the range of most other 5-ers. The neck, on the other hand, is a little wider at the nut than most other 5 strings that I've played but I got used to it pretty quick.

Thanks for the info! I've been finding more and more need for a low B sting and was toying with rigging my P Bass BEAD or BF#AD. It would would give me a purpose for having it, other than it collecting dust and taking up floor space.

Hmmm, a 4004 Cii/5, I imagine that would be like finding hens teeth. Once I add a horse shoe equipped Ric to the stable perhaps I'll have to seek out a 4004 c11/5 to take for a "test drive".
