Help.....suggestions needed for 360

Post by audiomatic »

OK, back in the early 90's a guitar teacher of mine sold me a '77 360 12 string that had been used on a recording project, he needed $$$. The bad news is that the pick ups had been changed to humbuckers (standard Les Paul style), I know, bummer. I gave it to a friend to use for a project he was working on and it has sat in a closet since. I just got it back this weekend and decided to clean it up and see what I can do with it.
Overall it is in nice shape, a few minor dings, and other than needing a setup it is very clean for a '77. I pulled the pickups tonight and the body was professionally routed.
I guess the question is, do I try and restore it(replace the routed sections and put Rick PU's in it), sell it as is (how much??) or try for a trade(what is the value?)
Any suggestions and/or guesses on value in current state would be appreciate.

In it's current state the value probably isn't much.

Have it professionally restored & keep it. You won't be sorry. Espicially if you got a good deal when you bought it.

Speaking personally, that's exactly what I would do.

Thanks. Based on the fact that it has sat unplayed for 15 years, keeping it isn't really something I am interested in. I did get a good deal on it back then, and I am hoping to trade/sell it for something I will play. I already have a 360/6.
Any idea what it is worth, or how much it would be to get it restored? Has anyone seen one routed out like this before?
The funny thing is, with 6 strings on it, and plugged into a plexi it sounds like my buddies 335.
ALso, the jack is flaky, where is the best place to get a replacement jack?

I purchased a Rick (1966 340) a couple of years ago that had similar routing done for humbuckers. I had it restored and my total investment was about what the guitar would be valued at today. For your year, I think $300-$500 is a fair range, given the additional cost of restoration. Here's the thread...you might find it interesting!

Thanks Jeff, that was an interesting read. Your guitar turned out great. I am not sure I am interested in putting that kind of money into it, I might try and get it cleaned up and setup. Then try and find someone interested in restoring it or playing it. I will post some photos once I get the camera out.

I think you guys are low-balling... definitely worth more than $500. A '77 360/12, in addition to being a slightly rare year/model combination, should be a fantastic playing guitar with a slim 60's-sized neck.

What finish is it?

I'd watch this auction if I were you, to get an idea of what a nice example is worth.

After all that neglect, is the neck okay? That would be my biggest concern.

Sell as-is and play as-is. Why pour $1500 into the restoration of a $2000 guitar?

What neglect? I actually played the guitar on Sunday and it played great, the neck is straight and action is low. The strings were old and rough... I was going to take it to my local tech for a restring/setup this week before deciding what to do with it. Other than the pickup mod, this guitar is in very nice shape, especially for a '77.

I think John was just referring to the "unplayed for 15 years" part. If it was at tension during that time, it should be ok. If the strings were removed, it may need a little convincing to get back to the correct pitch (meaning neck angle).

Right, that's all I was asking - you mentioned it had been sitting for a really long time (neglected) and guitars often come out of that sort of thing needing work, or perhaps a good setup.

It sounds really cool - if it were a 6-string I'd probably be making you an offer on it!

Sorry if that came off defensive, I didn't mean it that way. It was tuned down a step most of the time, and it was played from time to time, just not regularly. It has not been restrung in 15 years.....I guess that is neglect! It is very clean for a 35 year old guitar, hopefully I can find it a good home.
If it were a 6 string, I would probably hang on to it....I am just not a 12 string player. My old guitar teacher needed $$ and I never expected to own it this long.
I am taking it in for a setup today, hopefully have it back this weekend for some photos and maybe a youtube clip.
THanks for the input and help.

Jetglo.....
I have some photos (unstrung) but I have not uploaded them to a site yet. Is there a way to upload directly to a post?
