1960 4000 bass on the 'bay!!

Yeah, I know I can withdraw my bid.My feeling is during the week the Ric police will remove it if it's definitivly a fake. Maybe some of you guys can ask some questions as I don't want to be the only pain to this guy. I've contacted him three times already.

O.K...I asked and received the pics I asked for today. Nice guy. It,s a genuine horseshoe as far as I can make out, with the baseplate markings and original bobbin. The routs extend into the body a little where the toaster would normally be. I think it,s highly unlikely the body is a fake. Hard to put an exact date on it, but that neck will be a fantastic player...If anyone wants the pics please e mail me.

Those saw cuts at the end of the neck are not unusual for early 4000 series basses. I have one where the cuts come within a 1/4 of an inch of the pickup surround. The tailpiece is obviously wrong. The pickup appears to have a 70's high gain bobbin. The surround appears to be old but the pickup itself is not vintage. I have never seen an older 4000 sans pickguard before. Did Rickenbacker minimize the control route like that?

Thanks for posting Marc, I was waiting for my tux to come back from the cleaners....
It,s not easy to see if the bobbin has a lip on it or not. It does to me...or am I looking for one!!! My 64 with the large screws that are not painted and what looks like a faint line that runs down the middle of the bobbin looks similar.

the original wires would have been cloth insulated ... not plastic ...

Just received a very quick reply that the bobbin does have the lip on the top and bottom and therefore should be original. With that being original, I can,t believe the body,s a fake. This is in all probability a genuine 60,s 4000.

Now that I look at it a second time. Yes, the bobbin does have the right shape and the pole do appear to be screws and not mushrooms.
