Early Squire sounds?

Post by learning_curve »

I am perplexed! of course I often am. But working out some of Chris's music, I am finding he is a minimalist with the effects, it seems there is some nice compression and chorusing a little FAZE for fun sometimes often mixed but not to much? and I have not matched his distortion sounds yet? I do have an older obsolete ME unit from boss for now that is some of the problem. I will go to a GT-6B soon enough. If that does not work as well as I would like I'll try the POD units. Until then I am not all that good at it but I am working it out slowly. As soon as I get the rest of the music room heat and dedicated electric circuts in I will have more time to work on the music a few hours every night. I am not getting to the point again; My Question

is the sound Chris uses specifically on Silently Falling from F.O.o.W. ??? That buzzing sound that seems to sustain throughout much of the song, is he going through an old synth unit or something? Can I get that sound with standard effects? Of course I am assuming you guy's are familiar with that solo work he did.
If you havn't heard it in a while break out the CD and have alisten it is pretty cool!

I haven't even thought to see if it was on CD! I have the album I got when it first came out. I must admit I haven't listened to it in ...decades!

I know going back some with this one. Some of you guy's were not born yet in 1974! Hold out your hand and Silently Falling are two great songs to do with just Bass, Keyboard & Drums! and I would like to do "one" of these songs with just the three guy's playing. But am learning them both for fun! I have the bass lines down and Although I can't do all of Jon Andersons stuff I do sound a lot like CS vocally. Just have not practiced enough to sing and play these at the same time all the way through yet I always seem to have a brain fart during the song and get lost.

There are some great Ricenbacker sounds on this old Album! and the bass lines are fun! Well worth buying the CD. Will bring back memories if you heard it a long time ago. It is the CD that got me to set down the guitars for a while and buy a 4003. It is the sounds he used that have me befuddled! Can't figure out that clicky buzzing sound that seems to be coming from the bass in Silently Falling.

Come-on I know there are a bunch of you who know this work. Don't be afraid to admit your as old as I am or older! I don't care what style music you listen to, or play, if your a bass player this music is a blast.

I committed this album to metal tape years ago because I listened to it so much I didn't want to wear the record out in case a CD was never issued. I have all of Yes's solo stuff from '76 and Squire's album is definitely the best, most Yes-like album of the bunch. Having Bill Bruford on the album didn't hurt either. Anyway, now that the review is over...I believe he used an old Meistro Fuzz-tone on the song in question. I got the same sound back in the day with a BIG Muff fuzz, an MXR compressor, my 4001 and a Gallien-Krueger amp. I also ran a Mutron flanger, phase shifter, envelope filter(the only way at the time to get all those great Tormato sounds) and a Morley Power wah and volume pedal.

Hey I listen to it all the time, got the CD in my car. J Hall once commented here that Squire plays his 4005/8 on this record. Great album, but still I think his best recorded Ric sound is on Fragile, when he didn't drown it in effects.

Randy, I'm 42 - is that old enough? I was 12 yrs old when Fish came out.

I read somewhere that during the Tormato era, Squire was heavily into using the Eventide harmonizer, and a few other effects.

The fuzztone he uses is a Maestro "brassmaster"

Chris Squire has played through a lot of different amps and effects in the last 40 years ... but he still sounds like Chris Squire no matter what he uses ... A good place to start is the bass pod ... it gives you a lot of different ways to get tone ...

Alright! I am glad to see I am not the only nut who still listens to this stuff. Believe me I am not living in a bubble, I do listen and like some of the new stuff and I do plan on a modern set. This old stuff by Chris is so old now when I play it I have had comments from people who think it's new? It still has a fantastic sound and I guess the word is timeless. I owe it to myself to learn this stuff first.
Ilan I got ya by 1 year and yeah anything over 40 is old enough wish it would stop right here. but my Brother is a few years older than me and I was listening to Yes and Deep Purple and Zep etc. etc. when it was new. Loved it since then. I remember my Dad always yellin at my brother "Turn down that Hippie stuff" from the living room.

I wonder, with these new effects, if I can get that old Fuzz sound? if not I will have to find an old one and put it in the loupe.

Dane it's funny but when I got back into playing music it was because I was looking through some CD's to listen to in the car for the ride to work and This one was sitting on a table at a garage sale. I bought it and as soon as I heard it I started my second childhood! Could be worse right? Didn't go after the young chic thing didn't go out and buy the Corvette etc. etc. Although I suppose I will spend more on the Instruments than I would've on the Vette!

I hope I can capture this sound he used it is unique I have never heard it on another album anywhere.

Thanks for the answers

Dane, Scott, Jeff,? Do they still mae any units that have those old sounds or do I have to buy something vintage? I have to find that sound!

I tryed a gt-6b again it is lightyears ahead of this older Boss unit I am using now. as soon as I try a POD unit I'll make my purchase of one or the other?

I was not able to get the buzz sound I was after on the GT-6b but the kid helping me was not all that good with the unit either.

How many effects can you stack through a line? Don't I loose sound if I have to many signal units going to the amp?
