Stanley Clarke Playing A 4000!!!

I almost fell over when I saw this. And a solo on it as well! I had NO IDEA Stanley ever played a Rick!!!

A friend of mine sent me this link for me to see Bill Conners playing with RTF, something neither of had ever seen (which is cool in itself!!!).

Yeah, seen some of the Stanley/Ric footage before. I find it interesting that "his" tone is still there, if more distorted and muffled. He never talks about using that bass; I wonder how long he used it for?

Does anyone know for sure what bass Stanley used to record Hymn of the 7th Galaxy?

Also, was that color paint original or did someone have it painted?

A little OT here -- but man, Chick Corea is a good composer. That 2d clip is superb. I also really like what happens at 1:27: he turns up the preamp on the Rhodes and it goes into that classic overdrive sound. I don't know how many of you have had the pleasure of performing with a pianist on a Fender Rhodes, but they are amazing instruments in the hands of a talented player.

An old friend of mine still has his 88 that he bought in the mid '70s. I've played bass along with it many times.

Indeed. My high school has one as soon as they were available. We thought it was incredible. Of course, what it replaced in jazz band was a really beat up Hamilton. Hamilton (as made by Baldwin, when they were still made in the USA) were great school workhorse pianos, but after awhile, even a thoroughbred can't take any more beating.

Love this footage - I always wondered if this was the instrument on Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. Actually, this is the first time I've seen the "After the Cosmic Rain" video - would love to get my hands on a DVD of the whole performance!

Personally, not big on his tone here. His Rick sounds quite "un-Rickish" and frankly quite a bit too muddy for my liking. None of that lovely cutting quality Ricks are great for. Hate to say it, but he sounds better with the Alembic. Really cool footage though.

Me too. I believe there's an Old Grey Whistle Test special of the band from his early Alembic days; I'd love to get that too. I love RTF, they're my favourite fusion band. Most people rave about Weather Report, but I always much preferred RTF.

Oh yes. I had a beautiful '79 that I bought from the original owner, still in tune, practically unplayed, with all paperwork. I am only a marginally talented pianist but MAN that thing just sang. I used to GIG with it. Sold it to a good friend and it resides in his studio, still get to play it.

Sound-wise my Nord comes very close - but nothing feels like a real Rhodes.

Agreed. His Alembic tone is far superior, but then, a Series Alembic is a very different bass from a passive 4000.

Love the Rhodes. Herbie Hancock is killer on anything from the mid 70's on with one, and here's one of my fav solo's from the super talented Patrice Rushen at approx 3.30 to 4.45 to put a little color into this board...

I have to disagree - I'm probably in the minority, but I love the entire Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy album. To me, the Alembic sound wouldn't work here. This album is more than a fusion of jazz, rock and latin - it's almost jazz/metal! Distorted Rhodes, distorted guitar, distorted bass - I'm in heaven!
