Shell Pink 4003?

Post by tsarter »

Hey Everybody,

So, my '87 Ruby Red/BT 4003 is in need of some neck work. I'm saving my pennies for a trip to Paul W's shop for the needed repairs. While I've always liked the ruby red finish, I'm kind of done with it. Silly, I know, but it feels like a color I got past in the '80s somehow. If I can save enough scratch I'm considering asking Paul to refinish it as well. I'm considering shell pink - a nice match for my '61 Jazz bass.

Thoughts? Am I crazy to even consider covering up a somewhat rare Ruby finish with such a color?

I'd sell it to someone who loves Ruby Ricks. You should do well with the sale. Then I'd buy a Mapleglo which doesn't have to be in perfect condition to put a desired color on. Then there might be some extra $$ for the refin.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Not a bad idea, but of all the many Rics I've owned this one sounds the best, hands down. Don't know what it is, but no other Ric has come close to the tone of this one for me.

If you have one you like the feel of,best to hang on to it,and make what you want of it. I would love to see a shell pink Ric myself! (i keep thinking of what my white 4000 would look like in fiesta red,too)....

I'm not usually one for a change when concerning a stock finish, and think Joey's point is correct here, but a super cool 60's SP beats a hot 80's Ruby any day in my book...

Love to see some pix of the Jazz as well Tim!

That's the same way I'm leaning Andrew. Since I have not been banished for even suggesting it I'm guessing some others may agree.

I don't have an individual shot of my '61, but am posting a group shot I had for insurance purposes below. It's obviously the pink one - right next to my '61 P-bass.

Pink should prolly have white binding, or even the checkerboard treatment, with a white guard and nameplate.

Pink and black is too Frederick's of Hollywood.

Just thinkin'...

I'm doing a Shell Pink Fender Jag over the holidays. It's been on my list for a long time...

Hmmm.... that's an interesting thought. We will have something to talk about when we meet, won't we Paul?

I don't have any thoughts on the refin, I just want to say that you have an awesome collection of basses!

Holy nuts Tim! A shell Pink Rick would be awesome! You and I are always tracking the same because a Pink Rick is something I have been after for a while. (I know I'd have to have one done too)

Just last week I ALMOST bought a Pink Paisley 54 Reissue P bass because it's been one of my holy grail basses for a while.

I say do it!

I like pastel colours and I am onside with Paul..............given that it's a favourite player, I say white binding, guard and TRC is the only way to go with a Shell Pink refinish.

Bottom line..........whatever floats your boat.

I'm sure it is. If not, that one bass would clear up all my debt! I use both those Fenders quite a bit - great basses.
