Rattle: Don't suspect always the truss rods

Post by Hotzenplotz »

Good news for some here (maybe a lot of You knew it already...):

Since a few days there was a rattle to hear and I just thought "Oh please, not the the truss rods! She's still so young...!".
Seemed it is in the whole guitar, noticeable played through the amp, too.

In a certain way it was nearly impossible that the rods are responsible for the rattle because the guitar is quite new (just one year) and I am the first owner, knowing that nobody did her harm until yet.
But to locate the rattle was nearly impossible.

Bad day!

But then I had an intuition, and: Bingo!

In the end it was just a screw of the bridge about 1/8 turn too loose: Ta-dah! - No rattle and hum anymore. The screw seemed right before, but was't!
So, if there is some rattle: calm down! Maybe it is the same with Your guitar.

Best wishes for all with rattling guitars.

yea.........I think perhaps, when you get a rattle on a Ric, a lot of the time it's in the bridge/ saddles area.....Funnily enough, My Ric, which I only had in the summer, started to make a rattling and sort of metallic ringing noise about a month ago....This however coincided with me changing the strings...something that I just can't seem to do very well :? ( also affected the intonation a bit and staying in tune wasn't too good either ) I just left it alone and after playing a lot and allowing the strings to bed in ( about 8-9 days ) it righted itself and the rattle just quite simply went away. (the intonation righted itself as well and she also stays in tune now even after playing her for hours )....Only trouble is, my hands seem to sweat acid or something so by the time my amateurish string change settles down it' s almost time to repeat the process!!! but thats another story ( maybe another couple of posts....Sweaty hands problem...Changing strings problem!!! :o

This rattle was not noticeable all the time. Some days it was, some not. I believe it is that is caused in the normal, not big changes in temperature and humidity. And this one slightly to loose screw was all! Well, screws can screw someone up sometimes.

Sascha, good to hear that got solved :D

Worse than rattle is chime... my 360 bridge makes a little chiming sound on the b-string. Which doesn't carry over the amp at all.But still when you play you hear it acoustically... däng annoying!

Now, the buzzing on the bass side... weather's changed since the foggy days of last week. I had to re-tune the 360, buzz still there. Maybe I just need to raise the action a little? I only now remember that when I got it 2nd hand that the bridge was higher on the bass side... possibly to avoid the buzzing?!?

When does it buzz? The string(s) at special frets?
I think it is normal that the bass side is higher most times. Mine is slightly, at the 360 I had before it was more and seen some pics here in the forum I think there is much more difference possible.

Have You already added a quarter to half turn at the bass side? You said that the effect appeared after weather change, what IMHO is a sign for a too close to tolerance adjustment.

I wrote a few lines about adjusting and intonation, maybe it could help You:

Sascha, sorry, I might've been unclear: the buzz was there already before the weather change, and it didn't go away.

I already started a thread about it some time ago: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=403083
The bass side trussrod can't be loosened any more or the nut will be loose complately. The neck on the bass side is still almost straight! I use 011 TI jazz flats. I'll try raising the bridge a bit on the bass side. I doubt there's any option left short of firing the 360 in the fireplace!

Well, putting the bass side up got rid of the problem. I'll have to find the spot where it starts. All a learning curve for me... never used to do these things myself!
