A guy who is rareley mentioned is John Giblin.
He did session work for plenty famous artists.
I especially like his contribution to Duncan Brownes' Metro album from 1976.

Dennis Dunaway

His playing on the first few Alice Cooper albums is both articulate & supportive, his tone is fantastic, and his level of musicianship is simply stunning.
An underrated player who is finally getting some long-overdue recognition in the form of a Fender Custom Shop Signature Jazz Bass, and along with great players like Geddy Lee, Chris Squire and Billy Sheehan, one of my main inspirations for becoming a bass player & musician.

+1. He really had some neat bass lines. When I was much younger and started to learn bass, I used to listen a lot of old AC records. I listened and learned Dennis Dunaway's bass lines. "Pretties for you" and "Easy action" are still my favorite albums.

Another underrated bassist that is worth checking out is John Taylor, he had some really nice lines and fills in Ordinary World.

Has anyone mentioned Mel Schacher from Grand Funk? The first live album was what made me want to be a bass player. His skills on bass for that time period of the late 60's was great. I still like to listen to that album and play along with tunes like Into the sun, Heartbreaker, Inside looking out, Are you ready. His playing is what made me begin to notice the bass and the power and influence it has in music.

and I'm surprised no one has mentioned Noel Redding?

He was probably the greatest influence on my playing.
