Would love to see how many leftys are on here and where you had to buy your lefty Rick. Always Ebay for me. Cant walk into a music thats for sure.

On the wall: 360/12 Carl Wilson, 730S Shiloh, 660/12
On the floor: 360, 1997

Since the photo was taken, the 360 and 660/12 have found new homes.
Jingle Jangle built the 730S for me, the others were purchased from various retailers throughout the country.

Here's my lefty, a '79 4001-SLH - I ordered it from Southpaw Guitars in Texas back in about '94, I want to say. Not sure if they're still around.





I lived in Seattle at the time, and bought the bass sight-unseen. I already had two righty 4001s with chrome hardware from head-to-toe, and I wanted an old used Rick for gigging that I didn't have to pamper and buff every 5 seconds. And just for the sake of getting something slightly different, I decided to look for a lefty, string it righty, and then strip it & hand-paint it myself. The guy at Southpaw said they had 3 lefty Ricks - two 4001s, and the 4001-S. He said that the 4001-S was in "pretty good shape," so I ordered that one. When I got it, it was FLAWLESS. It was basically a brand new bass that had been sitting around unplayed for 14 years! Broke my heart to strip off that perfect Jetglo finish, but that's why I bought the bass to begin with. Kind of threw a monkey wrench in my plan when they sent me a brand new bass! But alas - I carried out my original plan to hand-paint it, and there it is.

The designation 4001S can be confused with references to plural 4001 basses: 4001s. I have to be careful with this in my writing of the book, so I usually put the plural on bass ("several 4001 basses . . .").

Anyway, to clarify, the 4001S is the model with no binding on body or neck and usually with dot inlay position markers. The 4001 (without the S suffix) is the "deluxe" model with the body and neck binding and triangular ("shark fin") position markers. The majority of 4001S basses were made in the 1970s and featured a set-neck construction (as opposed to neck-through) with a slab body made of two pieces of maple. Oddly, RIC price lists and catalogs fail to list this model at all until the very end of construction (in the early 1980s). Looks like most early "4001S" models made in the 1960s were to fill orders for export, becoming the Rose-Morris 1999 when sold by RM. For many of us, the first visions of a "Rickenbacker bass" was the "4001S" or the "RM 1999" in the hands of Paul McCartney, Chris Squire, Peter Quaife, John Entwistle and others who emulated them.

The "S" designation was also used for the follow-on 4003 design, and extended to apply to other models without binding and with dot inlays such as the 4003S/5 and 4003S/8.

I differentiate it this way:

A bunch of 4001s vs. a lot of 4001S basses or 4001Ss. Large S designates the model (4001S), a small s designates lots of them4001s, 4001Ss). I supoose it could be 4001S'.

You’re not the only one to ruin.. mm.. turning a lefty right handed, but the only one I’ve seen standing forward.
My ’79 Walnut was set up right handed when I got it - extra strap button, extra fret markers, flipped nut. Someone else here also mentioned getting a lefty like this.
