Wood retification was orginally done by caveman to harden the sharpened tip of their spears. They wrapped the spear in wet leaves and placed it in the fire. The leaves sealed out the oxygen and allowed the wood to char without actually burning up, resulting in an incredibly hard bit of wood.

The modern process doesn't involve any wet leaves but the basic idea is the same- burn the wood without access to air.

Great video! Stupid question perhaps... but what i want to to know is what does RIC do with all the sawdust or excess wood shavings. Is it somehow recycled or used in any part of the mfg process?

Regretfully, most of it is chucked out. Nobody wants sawdust or wood scrap here. We've looked at everything we can think of to recycle it, including as an additive to planting soil to making compressed firelogs; it just doesn't work economically.

If we were in a cold area, it could be used to fire boilers for heating but until we can figure out how to turn that into air conditioning, it's a problem.

Great video though!

One of the RIC workers inn the video also called it RickenBOCKer.
Dude changes it to the proper pronunciation about 35 seconds in when he's introducing JH. Someone (maybe JH) must have pointed it out to him.

Yeah, sorry - i mean to address my comment to cjj. My poor use of the quote function didn't make that clear. JH replied in this thread that he had to correct the P.Guitar interviewer, as suspected.

I saw my guitar!

No kidding around, my guitar is one of those unfinished 330s.

If my math is correct, this video was done quite recently. I was/am looking to buy a 330 and my dealer told me the factory is working on 4003s then they will start on new 330s -- just like this video reveals. One of those 330s is on its way to me (have to wait till Christmas). I can't wait to check the grain and see if I can match it to one of those new-borns in the video.

How about Hamster, or Guinea Pig shavings! :!:

When the kids were small and had those pet "RATLIKE CREATURES", I paid a fortune for those darn shavings!

You can see the SN of the JG 4003 that was being assembled at 20:49 in the video... 11 38387

So your guitar was in the video if it has a SN of 11 39xxx when you get it... Since the 4003's were the previous weeks run according to John in the video

Thanks for that useful bit of detective work. I'll use that to determine if I am on the right path.

If I am on the right path (and I think I am) then this video supplies baby pictures of my Ric while he was still in the womb. Kind of like that trade show picture of Lennon's 325. One day when I front a band bigger than The Beatles with my 330, this factory video will become quite historic. "See that unfinished 330? That's the one Tommy plays that changed the course of music history!"
