Tales Of Topographic Oceans? That WOULD be a serious undertaking. It would be especially interesting to hear the many different tones Squire used on that series isolated.

On the overdub tip, I had fun with the intro of Roundabout, harmonizing his overdubbed riff with a 3rd line using my '68. My overdub is panned left & Squire's original is panned right.

I havent downloaded them yet,but there were a few drop-ins/edits detectable on the original (vinyl) tracks when I first heard the album on headphones.
Anyone noticed them on the Jammit tracks?
CTTE would be interesting to listen to where edits are concerned.

I was just listening to CTTE over headphones while on a walk and was amazed that about 36 years later I still anticipate where the track changes of the 8-track tape I had for in the car were.

On another note and while I'm thinking of it, anyone else always cringe when in Soundchaser it sounds like Patrick Moraz comes in late?

I haven't noticed. It is titled "Soundchaser."

Okay, when does it happen?

Maybe Moraz wasn't sure if Howe was done soloing...

It sounds like he's late to the game, or as you say not sure if Howe is done, but WHY wasn't it fixed before release??

Well, it could have been... (dare I say it?) intended. Who knows? It could be just a matter of perspective. I always thought that Wakeman coming in with the Melotron strings on 'Heart Of The Sunrise' where he does at the 40-second mark felt sort of odd - like he forgot he was supposed to be playing a couple measures earlier and pulled a "Oh! Right! The strings!" and jumped in mid-phrase. However, this live recording from 1971 shows that he came in at EXACTLY the same place during that breakdown, so apparently that placement was no accident.

(go to 1:01:10 for HOTS)

OK - after giving that section of 'Soundchaser' a closer listen, I have to say that Moraz's'z'z'sssz placement of that chord sounded like it was totally supposed to land there. The way I interpret it, Howe comes blasting in with his "solo before the solo" (as he's usually wont,) and establishes the end of the preceding section with that last note he hits. If Moraz came in ON that last note of the intro solo with Howe, it would have sounded like he was stepping on Howe's transition. So - Howe hits that last note, Moraz waits for it to ring out a bit, Howe waits for Moraz to start the new section, then comes back playing over the new chords. I'm not saying that my interpretation is correct; it's just how I hear what they're doing and fortunately allows me to listen to it without going nuts! Now ~ the rest of the solo, on the other hand...

To me it sounds in the "right place".
If I thought the chord should come with the last solo note - then I would think it was late.... but I see it as the initial chord to introduce the following guitar melody - and Howe comes in after one beat...
Of course after a very "formless" kind of solo the listener may have a lot of interpretations of how it makes more sense to him.
Wasn't it Trevor Horn who said "Yes is the band who does everything the wrong way but it sounds right"? :)

I haven't listened to it for a while, but I think there is just different time signatures happening (sometimes at the same time) throughout the tune. Count each instrument independently and I think it all works out. As I recall - live the break was there as well.

The Sound Chaser timing is correct, at least as far as it was intended to be that way. Steve is playing a cadenza, even on the studio version it is a "live" solo and the synth lines are cue'd from Steve. Check out the QPR concert and you can see Steve giving Patrick the visual cues.

It's also noted as such in the sheet music for the solo from the book "Steve Howe Guitar Pieces". Next time you have a few free hours, try learning that one! I did, but can't really pull it off with the same phrasing that Steve gets. Maybe he's just better than me...

I think Steve should have named his book: 'Howe: It's Done.'
