New Byrds CD & which Fender amp?

Hi, everyone:

There's a new Byrds live CD that is culled from different performances from the early 1970s, I think. Still,"He Was a Friend of Mine" sounds alot like David Crosby harmonizing with McGuinn!!! Here's the link:http://www.amazon.com/Setlist-Very-Best ... 532&sr=8-2

Also, and I hope this is okay with Jim, I have a former college student who owns a music shop in Connecticut. He can give me a great deal on any FENDER amp. I own a Roger McGuinn signature 370-12 and i love to play-- of course-- Byrds and Beatles songs. I love that 1960s sound.

So-- does anyone have any suggestions for a FENDER amp???

How loud do you need to be able to go? I take it you will need to buy a brand new amp from your friend. If not too loud but loud enough for most real world gigs, a Deluxe Reverb RI would do the trick; if you need to make ears bleed a Supersonic or a Twin Reverb RI would do nicely, I think.

I saw McGuinn live several times--on most occassions he used Super Reverbs or Dual Showmans-----those four 10 inchers on the Super carry the treble of a Rick very well.....

Deluxe Reverb is what I use. I rarely take it over two. Any Fender amp at a reasonable volume coupled with the onboard compressor will get you that McGuinn sound easily.

I have a feeling that this really ought to go into the Forum 51; The Quest for Tone section. But if you guys can steer the conversation back to the Byrds/Byrds gear, I'll let it go.

Roger has stated that he thinks a Roland JC-120 pairs well with a Rick 12. As far as I know, he currently uses the house PA system when he plays and he (if you can believe it) tries to avoid getting too much 'jangle' on the Rick. I saw him arrive at a concert back in April. He had 3 guitars, a banjo, and a small gig bag (cords, guitar stands, tuner, etc.). He didn't bring an amp. Incidentally, his Rick seems to be wired so that the toggle switch acts as an 'off' button when tipped up towards the pickups.

Just as a reality check, what would a new Fender '65 reissue Deluxe Reverb cost through your friend's store?

Thanks, Jim, for letting it go this far!!! To answer Beatbyrd's question, I can pick up the 65 Deluxe reverb for $900. To steer this back more to the Byrds/Byrds gear, I have often read that McGuinn used some kind of Fender in the original 1965 Mr. Tambourine Man sessions. I've always regarded that album's Ric sound to be the best, the most jangly!!!!

Roger used an Epiphone amp (Not sure what kind) for "Mr Tambourine Man" & "I knew I'd Want You"...not sure about the rest of the album.

The Roland JC-120 is a GORGEOUS sounding amp...perfect if you are specialising in "Younger Than Yesterday" or "Notorious", but it won't give you that "Rhymnney" or "Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe" "Sting & Bite" as it were.

Hi Christian, didn't that "Sting & Bite" (sounds like a duo made up of the frontmen of the Police and Sabbath) come from the studio engineer using a pair of compressors to protect Columbia's equipment? Did Jim even use an amp for the first recordings? Tom

IIRC I think the engineer used a couple of Fairchild tube compressors to get that "Mr. Tambourine Man" sound. And I do believe Jim/Roger went into the control room and overdubbed the riff plugged directly into the board.

Sometimes, you can just trip over the sound... I did one day with my JC when I tweaked the chorus up to about 1.25 (basically the point where you can just hear it affecting the sound and no more) with the Ric plugged through my Zoom pedal with it's built-in compressor set to the middle preset. By accident, it came so close to MTM that I'm now re-thinking a compressor stompbox for those times I tackle Byrds pieces.
