I'm biding my time and saving a bit of money to dive into the Ric pool. Forums and the internet being what they are I've managed to tangle my mind a little. My initial intent was to get a new 4003.

but...

Searching around here I found information about the 3000 and 2000 series which caught me eye. I tend to like things that 'off the beaten path' and so the attraction is there. The 3000 itself (short scale) has the additional attraction, because I don't currently own a short scale bass. So, am I just being drawn to the newest girl to catch me eye.... or could this be real love?

New 4003 basses are readily available. The others you mention may take a bit of work to track down, and will cost you.

Check out the 4004Cii too. These are, for some reason, "off the beaten path" but are definitely something special, like a 4003 on steroids...

Yeah, the 3000 in particular is pretty rare, and often sells for much more than it is "worth" because there are relatively few out there. If you gotta have a Rick, and you gotta have a short scale, be prepared for a long search and a big price.

I would suggest you look elsewhere for a short scale if that is your priority. If it is not, there are plenty of used full-scale Ricks out there, and finding new 4003 Rick is getting easier as RIC is really cranking them out lately. 4004 are a little harder to find as they make much fewer of them and seem to produce them in short spurts over the last few years.

The 4004 is something I've struggled with aesthetically... sometimes it catches my eye and sometimes it doesn't. Sonic-ly I've not had the chance to try one... how does it compare to the current 4003 (which I have tried).

Think of the 4004cii as a Pbass on steroids, with a little CLASSIC RIC tone thrown in for good measure.

They truly are understated in the photo's. Of the countless RIC basses I've had, for a gigging musician, it's the cats ###! :0)

They don't have the resale of a 4001/4003, and you can score a beauty over at Pick of the RIcks in NJ. He has a few used ones in stock at a very reasonable price.

I hope to add a one off 4004cii in the near future so I can't say how they play or sound, yet. The new 4003's are fantastic instruments. I do have a May 2011 manufactured one and it rocks, hard!!

The stock version is just a simple VOLUME/TONE with a pickup selector switch.

This one is modded to have a stackable volume/tone switch for each pickup.

If you like a flat, wide neck, this would be great. The new 4004's have the same neck as a 4003, and is much thinner.

They are DEAD quiet, no single coil noise, and have an amazing low end BOOM.

If Tony doesn't sell you on one, I will!! The 4004's have become my favorite bass guitars. I don't just think of them as P-basses on steriods like Tony does. You can get a much growlier, almost J-bass tone with the treble pickup soloed and you dig in right, just before the treble pickup. With the last couple of bands I'd played in, if I didn't show up with a 4004, they were disappointed.
