Was just digging around YouTube for some vintage Television performances and found them playing "Foxhole" off their album "Adventure" in 1978 on the Old Grey Whistle Test and, lo and behold, a nice 4001 shows up strapped to Fred Smith:

Television is easily one of the most interesting (and influential) bands in the history of rock. I mean, is there anything else quite like Marquee Moon (the song or album)? As much as I love a band like Wilco, it is pretty obvious there is a strong Television influence in some of their music. I mean, Jeff Tweedy's wife got him a guitar lesson with Richard Lloyd for his brithday one year!

I love Television as well. You must get the book on Marquee Moon (those little album books that are available). I've read tons of them and it is far and away the best. I turned my son onto this album last year because we love Wilco so much. He has played it hundreds of times now. I looked at a bunch of clips over Xmas but missed this one- thanks!

You know I thought about getting that 33 1/3 book on Marquee Moon but didn't know if it was good and that series can be hit and miss. Now that I know, I will be picking it up!

It's a great book! I loved the album for years and knew bits and pieces about the history but so much that I wasn't aware of. It really captures the history of the entire New York scene and CBGB's, and how important Television was to it all. So ironic that many of the junior bands that worshipped Television (Talking Heads, Blondie, Patti Smith and The Ramones) were all considered as minor artists in NYC compared to Television.
I've read about 15 books in that series; some are indispensable (The Byrds Notorious Byrds Brothers) and I've only been disappointed with one (The Replacements Let It Be).

I've read about twenty of the 33 1/3 books and I didn't even know there was a Marquee Moon one. D'oh. That probably would have been the first one I read! Just ordered a copy. Thanks.

Not crazy about "Adventure" but "Marquee Moon" was a revelation. Still a great clip though!

1. Looks like that's an early '73 4001; note the non crushed pearl inlays. Cool.

2. Tom's got some kind of primitive buzzstop or foam (to prevent the sympathetic ring) behind the bridge of his Jazzmaster.
3. Poor Richard Lloyd really got the shaft in that video.

TV is a great band. They got lumped in with the CGBG's gang as New Wave. You need to get used to Tom Verlaine's voice though. Marquee Moon was a great record. Adventure was not as great as the debut. Tom's solo stuff is really good. One of the few guys rocking a Jazzmaster. Great double guitar attack with Richard Lloyd. Richard Hell was originally in the group before the Voidoids.

No way! Loved it from the beginning. Later on when I heard "Horses" for the first time, I couldn't believe how much of his vocal style he copped from Patti.

Was it the other way around? I read that Patti was inspired by them to do the band thing.

Television, one of my fave bands ever. Yep I think Jazzmaster when I think of Television, but it's a reminder of how I might love a band but not emulate them in my own playing - don't own a Jazzmaster (nor a Ric even though I love the Smiths - string spacing gets me).

Chuck - you're right. I am halfway through the 33 1/3 and Patti absolutely adopted his vocal style.

What threw me off there was that Horses was released in '75 and Marquee Moon was released in '77.
