That looks great! So, you fit the horseshoe into the normal pickup surround? I.e., you didn't use the larger surround that comes with the RIHS?jps wrote:I had one in my former July '73 4001, sounded great.BobHyde wrote:Thanks for sharing your mod! That particular HS PU I bought from a forum member years ago, and it came with a standard surround. When it was in the 4001 I used the original surround, without the string cutouts. I still have the modern surround the pickup came with.
As you can see, the shoes are angled up a bit to gain more string clearance to be able to lower the pickup and for a more vintage look to the pickup. AFAIK, this was the first one to have that done to it, by me.

Even if the Horseshoe and Toaster don't sound better, they look so right in a ric. I had a 74 Jet Glo a long long time ago. I seem to (maybe) remember the split / slot in the HS Mag, thinking that it wouild be easy to change strings by droping them through. Duh.......
It was a great player and sounder !

I think it is personal taste whether or not they sound better or worse. If you like clear tone and definition, then the toaster/magnetic horsey are the tops. If you want the ll heft, attack, and more muffled sounds of the high gains, then they are what you'll like and want.
From the adjectives I used, I believe it is obvious what I like.

Changing strings is definitely easier and quicker through the gap.

That is one one the reasons I like quick change bridges.ilan wrote:Changing strings is definitely easier and quicker through the gap.
