How many is too many?

Tonight, I found a guitar I'd like to add to my collection. The problem is that my darling other half says something has to go before something new comes into the house. Well, I'm not too keen on getting rid of anything any time soon. I'm quite attached to each and each is unique in its own way. I choose carefully, though she mightn't appreciate it in quite the same manner as do I. I've grown attached to each and every guitar and bass in my collection. They're not all 'show pieces', but they do matter to me.

The addition could be number 16. No, they're not all Rics. In fact, this addition would be my first SG. I have to ask for my darling's sake, though, how many is too many?

Up until last summer I had 36 basses 9 of them were Ric's, but thinned out the heard , I now have 20, 5 being Ric's 5 Fender Precisions, 4 Fender Jazz Basses, 3 Gibson's (Ripper, Thunderbird and SG Bass) 1 Musicman Classic Sting Ray, 1 Schecter C4XXXbass, 1 Danelectro Longhorn bass, oh well 6 Rics, 1 Ric 660 guitar..20 basses, 1 Guitar, so I guess my point is, you can never have too many...lol

Amateur.

Rule no.1: always have a small group of disposable "filler" guitars that you can "replace" with new additions.

See, in my case it's not money or numbers, but space for gear. I have around ten guitars on the wall at any given time and the missus wouln't know the difference if they were Korean Squiers or '59 Les Pauls.

That said, I'm always down for quality over quantity, consolidate a few to get something special.

Well, that might all depend on your "other half." I'm sure that, if I had 100 guitars, she'd know which ones I had and how many. I, on the other hand, do know how many horses she has ('cause we don't have 40+ anymore), but have NO idea how many saddles, bits, bridles, etc., etc.

Oh, and I don't even want to start talking about oil paints, easels, brushes, pencils, and other art supplies. I think she just bought a few more sets of high end colored drawing pencils this week... Hmm, maybe I need a new Ruby 4003...

"Too many"? I'm not familiar with that concept; please explain.

Actually, for many of us "too many" = "one more than the maximum number our significant others will let us get away with". From that perspective, you're doing pretty well to have gotten as high as 15 already.

As one of my band mates often says: "It's a nice place to park your money".

I spend my hard-earned money on a lot of stupid stuff: mandatory health insurance (thank you Willard M. Romney), auto insurances, workers' comp insurance, condo insurance, etc. ALL of it pretty much not worth the paper it's written on.

I try to keep mine to two purchases a year: birthday and sobriety date. And spend money I already have. Sometimes I go over that quota.

Currently I have 11 RIC basses, one RIC mandolin (thanx Jason!), and another 5 or 6 non-Rickenbackers.

My latest purchase was the FIRST 4001c64 TV YELLOW that RIC has made. Purchased from Chris at POTR. I pulled the coin from an index fund to pay for it.
In my mind it's WAY COOLER to have that bass than an index fund. And perhaps more profitable. Before that I bought a MID 4003 from Musician Friend's "confused computer" sale. Had to - $11-hundred-and-change was too sweet to pass up.

My Mrs. has been a good sport about most of it. Although there are times when I've fibbed: It's not another guitar - it's just a new hard-shell case for one I already own.
