Just for everyones info, I've purchased a couple basses from Darryl, including my 71 Azureglo 4001. He's a great guy to deal with and very honest. He will give you straight up info as best to his knowledge.

I asked about this bass and the 71 A/G quite a while back. The 63 had just gone to be refinished and I wished I,d caught it before it went. I don,t recall if it had the original finish or not. As nice as it looks now, it would have been preferable to keep it stock if it was the factory paint. I was sure that it wasn,t a genuine 4001S but at the time that had not been established.
The Azureglo is a refin too I believe, although it was blue to begin with. Again, it would have been better to leave it original, especially with a finish as rare as this A/G from that time period. That,s the earliest example I know in that colour. Bet it looks cool tho...

Joseph....did you say you've got a 71 azureglo 4001?????? Good grief, I think I just found the Holy Grail!!!!! If you ever, ever consider selling it (which I guess is highly unlikely) let me know! (Ah, now reads its a refin....still darn interested though!)Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!

Yes it's a refin, but a darn good one. I had been looking for a good 71 or 72 for the longest time and up popped mine on Darryl's site. I had purchased a bass from him previously and snagged the 71 as fast as you can imagine. I had never played a Rick that old before and was blown away by the flat thin neck. Low action, plays and sounds amazing. The tailpiece and Grovers have some slight corrosion but considering I only paid $1300, I think I got a good deal. The great thing about Darryl is he will give you a grace period to check out the bass. if you don't like it, send it back in same condition and he'll refund your money. Very good guy to deal with. I don't have a digital camera to post any pics, but a friend of mine does. I'll see what I can do.

Joseph, what,s the serial number if you don,t mind posting it...If it was an early 71 I wondered if yours is a 21 fretter. It could also have more of a 60,s neck profile as I,m sure there were a few of these hanging round still at the time. They are simply the best in playability.

Thanks for the info Joseph. My Feb 72 also has a thin, flat neck (and walnut wings), and is my baby, even if it doesn't see so much action any more. But my dream Rick is an early 70s azureglo (what was the first year for azure?), pref with checkered binding and full width crushed pearl inlays. I have thought about getting one in a different colour and refinishing it, but don't really feel comfortable doing that with an older bass. However one that's already refinished is fine! LIke I say, let me know if you ever get tired of it, I'll just sell an organ or something....

Back in the late '90s I was at a Guitar show and found an azureglo bass that the seller claimed was a '66. It had all of the period correct stuff from that time period (inlays, horseshoe, checker binding, thumbrest) but the output jack was a replacement, so it had no serial number on it. He wanted something like $5,000 for it. It looked like the color could have been azureglo at one time, but it had faded to a sort of Tourquise color... Needless to say I didn't buy it, but for that time, the price was out of line.... I wish I had investigated it a little further, looked at the pots, etc. but I didn't do so...

Gene, there,s a 68 4005 in A/G in Japan, that,s the earliest I,ve seen A/G on anything. I think Ric officially started it in 68/69. Who knows...

I'll check the serial number when I get home today to see which month it was made.It's definitly not a 21 fretter though. I've waited so long to find this baby, it sounds and plays so well, don't think I'll ever sell it. I'll see what I can do about posting some pics over the weekend.

daryl,sent me pics of the 63 plus seriel # its a 63 the headstock has been repaired up neAR THE wave it was sanded down when he got it he brought it back to fireglo ask to see his 68 4001s in mapleglo nice bass he wont sell that one.

there seems to be a lot of early 4000's popping up here and there strange for such a rare model ,must be the hike in vintage ric prices.

This went for between $1600-1700 on E bay a couple of years ago.
