Any opinions on cheap basses? SX Ursa?

Post by Grey »

I'm looking to get a cheap bass and i've seen these around on eBay. I've looked at some things other people have posted about them and they seem alright for the price. Does anyone have experience with these or suggestions?

I just want something that plays decent enough but won't require a large investment on my part.

I read all the SX hype but I didn't like my friend's, very uncomfortable neck and very heavy. Spend a little more and get a used Classic Vibe. Night and day.

The Classic Vibe basses run about 350$ and that's more than I want to spend on this.
Those SX basses seem like a great deal, and all i'm concerned with is that they will not fall to pieces, that the electronics work, and that if I play it it will produce sound.

i haven't tried an SX,but yamaha's rbx series are real nice for very little $$$. i paid $150 for a used fretless rbx240f. i did replace the pickup tho,the ceramic magnet pickup lacked warmth to my ears.....also OLP seems to be a pretty popular,low-cost bass line.

I have an SX here, it's an older one with the old Fender type headstock. It's a short scale, so it just sits here. It was my daughter's first guitar.

I have to agree with JB here, those Squier Classic Vibe & Vintage Modified basses are the way to go. Used, you can fine 'em for $200 or less!

Yup! Well worth the little bit extra you'll spend. But I get you. You just want something that will make sound.

Yeah, i'm just trying to figure out if i'll like bass enough to want to keep playing it and don't want to go in more than I need to.
I get the feeling that if I have a bass and a guitar, even if I like the bass, i'll always reach for the guitar first. So for something that might only have a few uses for certain songs that I want to play bass on, the SX seems like the ideal solution.

that's pretty much the same way i approached purchasing a fretless, maybe not go for a $2k instrument right away...OOTH, i find i can get quite a nice sound out of my "cheepies",and rotate using them often. i just played a 2 hour practice last night with my DANELECTRO hodad, recorded it on the iPhone, and was actually quite impressed with how it sounded. (through a 45 watt Fender amp no less...)
bottom line is check out the individual instrument (if able),because there are GREAT $200 basses,as well as ****** $2000 basses....
edit...hmm used a verboten word inadvertently, let's just replace that word with "inferior".......

I've got about 5 SX basses, all of them stock, all of them gig.

My experience with SX is also very positive. Mine has the older Fenderish headstock but other than replacing the pots just because, it plays and sounds great. For the $109 plus shipping I paid, I was very satisfied. Better than the Squiers I tried in the store here; in sound and feel.

Kurt has a store with a LOT more selection. Google Rondo Music. There is an SX thread 12 parts long over at TB.

Just about to leave my house with it. Hey I love my Ric more than anything but, this bass feels good, cuts through a mix and I don't worry about banging it around.
