Al Casey

Post by blue330 »

I have just had my mind blown by Al Casey's version of The Hearse, written and produced by Lee Hazlewood! On the insert sheet of the Sundazed compilation, Lost Legends of Surf Guitar, Al can be seen holding a sweeet Capri with what appears to be a Kaufman vibrato, and I think this is the guitar on this track. It sure sounds like it. This is not to be confused with the later version of The Hearse by The Astronauts! Al's version rules. Does anybody know him? I think he was a So. Cal. session guy, originally from AZ. Whatever the amp is, it has unreal reverb.

Kinda like this one? (found it through a Google image search)

I don't know guitars, so I have no idea if that's a Capri

That's a Capri, Marc. Very good, for a bassist.

For extra brownie points, what model Capri is it?

That's a tiny pic! I can't tell if there's a vibrato or not--if there isn't, it's a 360; if there is, it's a 365.

Definitely a vibrato bar right under the strings. So, yeah 365..isn't that what I said? :D

(looks around) Ok, where's my bass. Back to my day job.

Binding/triangle inlays = 360, +5 for vibrato. No binding/dot inlays = 330, +5 for vibrato. Simple math. :D

The same pic is on the back of his "Cookin'" CD from Sundazed.
