Black pickguards

Post by SloRider »

Hey guys any ideas where to procure a black pickguard ?

I want to spruce up my standard 2008 4003 and this bass really caught my eye -

I'm a bit of a noob but from what I understand the black covers are hard to find. I considered getting one I saw on ebay, pickguard cover, but it was in two pieces and it wouldn't fit a newer 4003.

btw what do you guys think of that mapleglo? Is it me or is the color a bit more yellow than most mapleglos? I think it is something maybe with the camera or whatever...

Well, pickguardian.com can make just about anything you want. I just received a 1/2 inch spaced black pickguard from Tony, and it's great. I may actually have a standard 4003 factory black pickguard for sale soon. Not completely sure if I'm gonna sell it tough...

The older clearcoat will tend to yellow with age, but I think that pic is more a factor of the camera. My '84 4003 is fairly yellowed, this pic is fairly accurate.

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

CJ...he will need 30 posts to access the marketplace if you are selling your pick guard. 8)

What's with the black truss rod covers? Why so hard to find?

I wanted to make a move on that bass in the pic but apparently it has sold :(

I think RIC has not done black plastic parts for a while (10+ years, or since they stopped doing white) but some of the finishes being produced this year have black TRCs, so maybe (hopefully) it will get easier. I sent an e-mail to RIC via their website about getting a replacement for my black TRC -- which usually involves returning the old/damaged one and paying a fee -- but they have not written back in many weeks. Last black TRC I saw for sale on eBay was $500.

Wow. 500? that is nuts. There is one right now that is up to $150.

What are the new models that come with it now?

All the new 4004 models have black TRCs, and they come with white or gold lettering depending on whether or not the hardware is chrome or gold.

Ha! That's the same one that was $500. I guess the seller realized how "nuts" their asking price was. That one is a little rare because it has the silver non-raised lettering, but still ... $500?! I paid $600 for my 1982 4003 ... and that was for the whole instrument with a truss rod cover.

The Laredo's TRC is silver lettering, not white.

I don't doubt that there could be a mistake in the parts diagram description, but it doesn't say silver:

http://www.rickenbacker.com/pdfs/4004.pdf

"06513 Blk w/Gold" or " Nameplate, (Black with Gold Letters)"
"06512 Blk w/Wht" or " Nameplate, (Black with White Letters)"

I haven't seen one in person, so all I have to go by is the website.

Maybe they just haven't updated the parts diagram yet...
Ragardless: it certainly looks better in silver.
