Hmm. There is some slight overlap of models, but in reading up on some of the websites, including this one, it seems most lap steel production had ceased by the time bass production got into full swing. I'm simply wondering if the alloy for the horseshoes changed at some point, or the tempering of the alloy, since it is the late-60's bass shoes that seem to be the ones that are talked about most as dying. Anybody want to sacrifice a few shavings off their respective horseshoes to someone with a spectrograph? The reason I say tempering, is because if a standard alnico magnet is heated too much, it will lose its temper and magnetism and can't be recharged, either.

Anybody know if it's possible to get a black horseshoe pickup?

I believe I had read somewhere else on this forum that someone had acquired a "black anodized" horseshoe during some kind of special Rickenbacker Boutique sale, but that's long since gone, and I can only find chrome. I know Lollar makes them, but he's backed-up, and I doubt he would take a special order ... nor could I afford it, certainly.

Paul W. had one going on with his fretless shadow. Ask him. Jingle_Jangle is his name.

I actually sent Paul an e-mail over a week ago about his refinish rates and haven't heard back from him; I take it he's a busy guy.

I've only heard of two black horseshoe pickups in my time here, both mentioned here.

Those are probably the same 2 of which I have heard; Paul W's, and the fellow who said he bought one during the anniversary (?) sale.
