Any one else notice that the ebay MG s8 has 4 of the smaller style tuners...I've never seen that on a standard 4003s8. I kinda like it though...nice mod and the headstock doesn't look as clunky as my regular 4003s8...hmmm.

I had noticed this too, but they are actuially all the same tuner. The octave string tuners have had their keys replaced with ones for Schaller guitars. The Schaller M4 tuner is actually a 12:1 guitar tuner to begin with that has been adapted to bass, and as such is not my faveorite tuner. I prefer the factory 4003 tuner for the root string and Grover Sta-Tites for the octaves.

Heres how they did it in the late 70s/early 80s with the 4008. However Dane's modded ones are a very sensible option..

RIC pretty much got it right the first time with the early 4005/8 and two prototype 4008's. I refined the design so that the tuners were now all in a straight line with more symetry in the overall design. I also have a version with the traditional 4000 series cresting wave at the end.

As far as the 4003S/8 in the link goes, I know these hold a high value, especially if they are in nice condition, but that one is overpriced.

The eBay one is about $2000 too much. AND it's boring old Mapleglo.
