Vint. 330 stripdown

Post by rick325 »

Guess I posted this in the wrong forum, maybe it'll fare better here.
Iv'e got a 1967 jetglo 330 I want breakdown to clean, old hardware, finish, fretboard ,adjusting ,etc.
do to the age, don't know if things will go back together ok. this guitar is in almost new cond. ( as I'm the orig. owner).
Just need some advice on getting it back in playing shape, I've done work on most of my guitar's , but don't want to mess with this one without some direction first! , this rick is 45yrs old and needs a go over.

thanx.

I was wanting to tear it down ,to give it a good cleaning, go over everything , adjust the neck" to rid fret buzz" etc.!
the guitar is 45 yrs. old ,pretty much retired it awhile ago! and needs attention to enjoy playing it again.
Just don't want to charge into it (not wanting to damage anything) taking things off ,that havn't been moved for so long.
the most urgent problem is the bridge, corroded adjustment screws, can't just start cranking away!
Old style neck adjust., "I did not know of" ,until reading on the forum! just trying to get feedback so not to make
(avoidable)

mistakes! This guitar is in like new cond. but was used quite alot when it was new,so things froze up over time
th,th,th, " that's all folkes"..............

well, frets wear down over time so sometimes you need a fret dress or even a refret to get rid of buzzes. Quite common for a 45 year old guitar to need a refret if it's been well played. My 300 is from the 1990s and it's already had a refret.

Stripping it down is pretty straightforward as there isn't much you can strip. you can remove the metal hardware and electronics, that's it basically. Other than unsoldering the pickups the electronics will come out in one piece on the back of the pick guard. WD40 is good for most corroded things, but gentle pressure should do.

basically i would take it to a guitar tech if it's not playing well and you don't know what you're doing. if it's just cosmetic clean up you can do that yourself with brasso and polish and WD40, but if it needs neck adjustment, setup, fret dress etc. you should get it looked at.

I don't think I would use Brasso on chrome plating! You can use naphtha to clean every part of the guitar, however.

found it fine for wiping green gunk off tuners etc and didn't lose any plating. never tried naphtha, but I'm sure it's dandy too.

That's good to hear. 8) I thought it may be too abrasive.

you don't have to get it on those pads. it also comes as just a liquid. i think it's just chemical rather than abrasive, designed to dissolve oxides.

I have a couple of cans of Brasso, it came in quite handy when I had my two Alembic basses.
