If you know someone with my name, then I can pretty much guarantee you'd know it was me on the forum, because I would've already been pestering you for advice before I purchased, and you'd be on the short list to be notified when I did take the plunge.

I have a 4003 mapleglo in shipment right now - my first 'real' bass...

Arrived. Unfortunately the sticker on the box reminds me not to take it out for 6 hours if the shipping temperature is near freezing, and it was.

Tick, tick, tick... it's torture. I've got a trip for which I must leave in less than six hours. Looks like it's coming with me.

6 hours? When the box comes from Rickenbacker, it warns you to wait at least 48 hours...

At least that was the case before the switch to the new UV cured finish, perhaps that has changed?

Seriously? Wow. Well, it does say 6 hours but A) it didn't come from the factory and B) I prefer to wait the safest period.

Maybe I'm just overly cautious even if 6 hours is fine for the new UV finish to acclimate in the box. I'd still wait for at least overnight to unpack a new guitar during the winter.

Caution is the sensible route. I took it on my weekend trip and waited 47 hours to open (because I had 48 hours to report shipping damage).

Oh... my... god... this is one of the most beautiful things crafted by human hands I've seen. I had no idea the fingerboard was practically a mirror! It feels good, it looks good, it sounds good; it does not brew me an espresso in the morning and does not take out the trash, but that doesn't seem to be too much of a drawback at this time.

Curiously, I'll be playing my cheap Yamaha bass a lot more now that the Rickenbacker is here. I need to practice but I don't want to put mileage on a work of art for mundane things like scales.

To keep on the topic, I offer Rick Laird to add to the list. I'm stretching here. To me, the most easily ignored member of Mahavishnu, but he had to be pretty good just to keep up. 'Favorite' of course is different from 'good' and I can't say he's a favorite, so here's a favorite: Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant.

If is was mine I would be practicing scales of over my new Rick! Like a fine Martin acoustic, it will get better with age. And it will become a part of you like another limb! Congrats on the new bass!

I have a jazz tutorial book by Rick around here, somewhere, that I bought decades ago. I saw Rick only once, in 1972 with the MO as a double bill with them and FZ&TMOI.

here's a favorite: Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant.

I saw Ray in 1975 with GG, I was right at the front edge of the stage and have some great 35mm slides of the band, once again, somewhere around here, packed away.
