4001v64 Dumb Questions

Post by highway_star »

Now that the Rickenbacker bug's bitten me (thanks guys), can someone describe how a 4001v64 performs tonally and playability wise? I already own a 4003 and I'd like to see what the differences are.

I liked the "feel" of the C64's neck better than the 4003.

I don't like the upside-down headstock!

The sound is the 'same' as a V63 (cause the p'ups are the same).

Now if that thang had checkered binding...

In what way did you like the C64 neck over the 4003? From what I've read, the C64's neck is not as thick as the 4003's and may work better since I have small hands.

Jared,

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought the pickups for the C64 are wounded differently than the V63's.
That's what I think anyway, but only JH would be able to confirm it I guess.

Stephan-

You're right! The C64 is wound differently. I was thinking of the materials not the electrical.

I believe the toasters are the same, but the difference in the horseshoes should give it a different tone-But I can't tell.

I just played a C64 yesterday at Bass NW in Seattle. Really nice bass, but in comparison to my '78 4001, the neck was much wider. I wasn't impressed with the sound of the E-string. It could have been a dead string. Does it have the bridge capacitor?

so the v63 horseshoe will sound more like a modern high gain and a c64 will sound more like a 70's high gain ... the real 60's horseshoe pickups were more like 7 or 8k ohms if my memory serves me well ... and all toasters are supposed to be scatterwound to 7.4k ohms ... I tested several and none were exactly 7.4k ohms but they were close ...

When I have nothing better to do, I will swap the C64 horseshoe with one in my V63s
