Something's Changed

Post by cjj »

I just couldn't leave it alone, just had to make a couple of mods. I even went so far as to drill some holes...

Sorry for the crummy picture, I don't have my new camera yet...

Would the holes be to get the toaster low enough to under the guard?

OK, here's the scoop. I changed the bridge pickup from a hi-gain to a RIHS and the neck to a toaster. Additionally, the neck pickup was moved from the 1 inch position to the 1/2 inch placement. Pickguard is new, from Tony at pickguardian, made like the older 4001 version without the double hump...

As long as you went to the trouble to do all that (BTDT 8)) why didn't you do the longer '60s style pickguard?

I guess I haven't mentioned yet that the bass looks even greater than it did originally, me, obviously, being into that era's (60s) looks. :D

Well, ya know what? I actually considered that. But, as some of you know, I'm a bit of a wood freak ( :!: Bit? :?:  ) and the thought of covering up even more of that flamey maple, well...

Interestingly, I didn't do ANY routing to put the toaster in, even at the 1/2 inch position. I had noticed a while ago that RIC had, for some reason routed this bass to be able to take a toaster in either position. In fact, they actually messed it up just a bit and routed the cavity just a bit too far towards the fretboard on the left (bass) side. You can almost see a tiny spot where the pickguard doesn't cover it, the original didn't either. I was going to have Tony make it just a hair bigger to cover that, but forgot about it completely (this gettin' old stuff sucks   ).

The only holes I had to drill were to mount the surround for the RIHS. I considered using the original new style one, but eventually decided I'd never want to change back, so what the heck. Still, it was a bit unnerving drilling holes in a gorgeous, one-off Rickenbacker...
