Yeah nothing sounds like an upright except an upright. I would also go with flats for a country rock sound.

I have Pyramid Gold flats on my custom fretless 3000 that runs a 4004 humbucker and the sound is very punchy and fairly bright and actually very similar to Gedd Lee's sound when played in his style. If I roll of the treble I can get a very warm tone not to mention all of the semi tones and slides that come with a fretless. I could use this bass at any gig.
