Neck Widths 4004 vs 4003

Post by bartyclue »

I went after work today to my local dealer, who had just taken delivery of a 4004 Cheyenne. I played it for a few minutes and the 1st thing I observed was the neck at the nut felt way wider than any of my other rics. I have looked at the RIC website and compared specs for this Bass and for a 4003 of which I have two of. They both list the nut width at 1 11/16". I swear the Cheyenne felt much larger. I dont have particulary big hands so whenever I play a bass that has a wide neck, I notice it almost immediately and feel very uncomfortable. I can only assume the RIC site is correct but I know what I felt. I even came right home and grabbed a 4003 to compare, and my 4003 feels "good". Is it possible that the necks vary in their widths and not everyone is to spec. I was really keen to acquire this Bass... now I am not so sure. My dealer has a Laredo coming in soon as well. Is there any difference between the Cheyenne and the Laredo? (and yeah I know their web site lists them indentically at the nut as well). Something just doesnt feel right and to the best of my knowledge, my left hand has not shrunk lately. Sorry if this has been covered in a previous thread.

Brain,

I'd be interested myself.

I'm glad to hear the 4004's are shipping!

well the nut width may be the same but the profile may be more stout on the Cheyenne. Lucky for me that I have hands of the larger variety so variations in neck size is rarely a concern for me.......if anything the narrow/thin necks are an issue for me if I had to choose.

I thought they were making the 4004s with the same 2-piece necks as the 4003s now?

I played 2-piece 4004s made as early as late 2009 if memory serves. Neck profiles were not consistent at that time, however.

Is it time to resurrect the 'measure your girth' thread? 8)

I was thinking the same Gary, perhaps we should have a 4004 segment?

Jeffrey, 1151025 or 51st week of 2011 if this helps. I went back again this morning and I am positive this width is wider than my 4003's and the profile is not as stout as they are. It feels like a plank. Otherwise this is a beautiful axe and I am bummed that my left hand is two small...its not everyday you get the green light from the wife to add yet another "damn guitar" to the herd.

I haven't looked at the measure your girth chart in a while, but I know there are already 4004's on it.

I'm more looking at the NEW 4004's Joey. The two piece neck measurements.
