4003 Chrome pickguard????

Post by dwade »

All I want for my stock Jetglo is a chrome or Stainless guard. Some previous thread on this board was similar and the answer was BassPartsResource, well they dont do chrome guards, I mailed them. I found that for about a hundred bucks I could order a checkerplate from Pickguard Heaven. Too pricey. Anyone know of a shop I can find this item, Online or offline? I'm in Tampa. Or guess I'll have to buy a sheet and snip it myself (eewwww).

Must it be chrome or is the mirror acrylic on some plates close enough to the visual effect you seek?

Well, I see mirror available online and that could be an alternative, but only if real metal isnt possible. I can see doing mirror B4 checkerplate (too industrial).

Here's a company in the UK that makes stainless steel polished mirrored pickguards.....they don't have any for a 4003 in stock, but I believe you could always enquire and see if they'll make you one:

I was thinking about one of these also. I came across an old picture of a 74 4001 JG that I had and it had a metal pickguard. Makes me wish I kept it...(the bass and the guard)

How did the metal pickguard affect the weight distribution ? Was it much heavier than an original ?

No, but it made the bass come alive because the front pickup was attached to it. IT was like making the entire pickguard the pickup....Changed the tones, gave me a lot more....Now I want another one..

Jaymi -
Do you mean by the "front" pickup, the neck pickup? It would have to have metal to metal connections directly to the pickup coil/housing, for that effect, no?

No flat chrome here, but some other interesting materials:
http://www.cmkpickguards.com/cmkrickenbacker.html
They have metal checker plate guards for other basses.
