Just bought first Ric in Japan

Post by Santoryu »

I've been living in Japan for quite a while now and have wanted a Rickenbacker for even longer. The past couple of years I've been serious about getting one, but the recession and last year's earthquake put a major dent in my finances.

Anyway, money's good now and I finally got my first Rickenbacker, a 330 FG! It looks and sounds amazing.

I live in Tokyo, and in Tokyo there's a district for almost every hobby or niche. There's a book district, a sporting goods district, electronics, motorcycles, shoes...you name it. There's a musical instrument district in a place called Ochanomizu(a lot of you might already be familiar with it) which consists mostly of guitar shops, and this is where I've been window shopping for years. Prices on Rics are usually quite high here, but very recently many of these shops have some heavily discounted and I was able to get a new one at an amazing price. It's an '11, so I'm not sure if they're trying to move old stock, or if it's the crazy exchange rate, or what. There are always some nice used ones too at reasonable prices too, so now that I have my pristine, brand spankin' new 330, I feel a little better about getting a scuffed or scratched used Ric. In the same store there was a beautiful used 620FG and a 381. Actually, Tokyo is a great place to buy guitars, and I'm happy to say, you can get new, used and vintage Rickenbackers quite easily.

Well, I just wanted to come on here and share the experience and say that, as a new member, this forum is much appreciated.

Congratulations on the 1st Rick Jeremy!! That latest Fireglo looks great, and I love the back-to-the-'60's narrower headstock as well. You have chosen an absolute classic...and may it be the first of many coming your way!!

Congrats and Welcome.

Next time you are in one of these stores can you take some pics of some of the vintage ones. I would love to see what they have.

I'll definitely give it a try. Maybe after a couple of trips, I'll have a nice variety of pics to show.

Welcome and congrats, Jeremy! :)

BTW, Japanese RIC dealers get on occasion special limited-run instruments not available elsewhere, so you are in a good location to get some unbelievably cool ones!

Welcome Jeremy! Having spent a good seven years of my adult life in Tokyo, your post has left me a little wistful, especially with the sakura due to bloom next month...

Congrats on the 330 - it's a beauty! The FG is fantastic!

I checked out the Japanese Ric site and saw some of the models. Woah, expensive....but very nice, of course. Not sure if I've ever seen one in a store or not.

Nice to hear from a former Tokyoite. Yeah, coming up on cherry blossom season. Excellent time of the year.

FG is great. The finish and color on it is just insane. I'm not used to having such a nice guitar, so I'm a bit tepid about putting it through it's paces. Even have to be careful with belt buckles or metal buttons so as not to scratch it. I've got a cheap-o 8000yen Mavis that I've been playing(pretty decent quality, actually), and definitely don't have to worry much about that.
