Re: Interesting new product
I've almost always anchored at the dip in the PG, but it's not thick enough to provide me with a good purchase. I wouldn't call this product ugly, but I wouldn't call it overly attractive, either. I'll likely get one for the 4003 and check it out before considering two more for the 4001s.

Re: Interesting new product
I was doing some fingerstyle stuff today and noticed that my thumb likes to anchor at that spot on the pickguard. Then I saw this thread... weird. I wonder if those rests come in black.
Re: Interesting new product
When I play bass, I'm pretty much all thumbs, so I'd need 5 of those!!!

i'm sure there will be center to center screw distance differences between various ages of ricks so there will be a lot of guards this piece won't fit on as a "one size fits all" .

I had that thought also.BAD RONBO, KiLLeR DWaRfS wrote:i'm sure there will be center to center screw distance differences between various ages of ricks so there will be a lot of guards this piece won't fit on as a "one size fits all" .

Re: Interesting new product
The seller indicates in the ebay listing that the one advertised is for a 4003 and that he plans to be making these for the 4001 as well. So, if nothing else, it sounds as if he is very aware of screwhole differences. That sort of awareness is a good sign in that I plan to send him templates, a la pickguardian, to make sure that any product is perfectly matched for my basses. Once I get off me duff, I'll let you know what he says about all that.

Looks like a useful product; very minimal but functional.

That is exactly where I put my thumb, so I bought one and will try it out.

One other thing,, if your an aggressive player and really dig in, I could see this thing cracking right in the middle.

You think so? I never heard of someone cracking through a thumbrest before...cheyenne wrote:One other thing,, if your an aggressive player and really dig in, I could see this thing cracking right in the middle.
Re: Interesting new product
A regular thumbrest no. This looks long, narrow and with no support in the center.

I did read the ad though and see that it's 1/4'' thick polycarbonate, so it could be fine. Hopefully the guy gave it somewhat of a beating before putting it on the market.

Yeah, polycarbonate is WAY tougher than plexi (acrylic).gearhed289 wrote:+1cheyenne wrote:One other thing,, if your an aggressive player and really dig in, I could see this thing cracking right in the middle.

It is common to fabricate things from polycarbonate sheet by bending it with a standard sheet metal bending brake. You can bend it to much greater than 90 degrees and it doesn't break, just bends like sheet metal...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Re: Interesting new product
For the past six months or so, my improvised solution to the lack of a thumb rest in this area is to fold a thin pick (the ones that Just Strings sends with your order) in half and wedge the point of the pick under the pickguard. I probably play as hard as anyone here and that thin pick hasn't broken yet. I would think that polycarbonate would hold up, but who knows? I've ordered one of these and will report back.
