"REDSTAR 8 ????"

Post by ricken5er »

So in my quest for an 8 string Rick a couple of years ago I came across a picture of an all red 4003s8 the seller reffered to as "redstar" and it was going for $11 000 or something crazy like that. What of this "redstar 8" Did someone buy it? Are they in the forum? gotta see those pictures again. What's the story behind the "redstar"? I had one once ,but that was after too many hot wings

And at $11,000 I'd wait a bit longer......

There were rumors of 12 eight-string Rednecks made. AFAIK two are in the forum - Johm Minutaglio's and Michael Gill's.

Here's the story -

The "Redneck" was one of three monochromatic paint schemes that came out in the 1987-1990 time period. They were built like the 4003S (no binding) but had maple fretboards which were painted along with all the rest of the wood in one opaque color. Rednecks were RED, Tuxedos were White, and Blackstars were painted Jetglo. Supposedly there were 200 Blackstars made (and the Blackstar was the only one of the three to be listed on price lists) and a few of them were five-stringers. A handful of the 125 Rednecks were made as eight-stringers, but no five stringers are known to exist. Don't know of any of the 125 Tuxedo's with "extra" strings, but I have seen a lefty Tuxedo on eBay a few years ago. Here's a shot of the "Triumvirate":

Awesome trio, Paul! Are they yours? Another Blackstar with the foil top knobs.

While I know all three were limited production, I've seen more Blackstars for sale and posted by members of this forum. Not so with Tuxedo's or Rednecks. I kinda like the term Redstar better!! :D Anyone have production numbers on the other two??
Just for the record, I'm not interested in adding any to the growing number of Rickenbackers living in my home!! :D

Sepp, the answer to your question was in my post. That said, the STATED limited edition run may not have been the ACTUAL production run. For example, they may have said "No. xxx of yyy" but we don't know if they actually sold yyy of that model. RIC does not reveal its production numbers beyond what is stated in the few limited edition certificates. They don't have to, really.
