"the short solo on "I Wanna Be Your Man" is amazing, even some 40-odd years later"
Yeah I fully agree it floored me first time I heard it way back when but Wyman's Bass playing also blew me away , I was able to get a Boot DVD of 60's Stone clips & the first clip is them doing "I Wanna Be Your Man" live with Brian playing a Gretsch Anniversary that sadly doesn't capture the power of the studio cut during his slide break but Bill his playing his *** off w/ his Framus Bass , I had one of those & skinny neck aside they're still no day at the beach to play he contorted himself to get the most out of it , really something to see

Brian was really into the blues and heavily steered them that that way while he was alive, the first version of the Stones has always been my favorite, drugs have killed and incapacitated a lot of talented people. Drug addiction is more than just a lack of self-discipline, it is a sickness. He was addicted to barbituates (I'm sure other stuff although that is just conjecture on my part). It is a tragedy that he was thrown out and died but in reality it would be almost impossible to work with anyone hooked on those things, they are sleeping pills. Brian was the Stones catalyst in the early days and there would have been no Stones without him. When he was alive he was the star and focal point of the band, not Jaggar.
Bill has tiny hands according to interviews with him and can't play a full scale bass.

None of those guys are particularly large, but Bill does seem more elfin than the others. I'm a huge Brian fan, recognizing his talents and vital role in the band's greatness, and I agree that it was a tragedy what happened to him (rumors of foul play, or self-destructive behavior). In my mind's eye, the image of The Rolling Stones still has a blond guy playing a white Vox teardrop guitar.

Agreed Jim. Brian was quite a legend and he played a couple of Rickenbackers too.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

After Rose-Morris lost their distribution deal with Rickenbacker in the UK (or quit, I'm not sure which), they started selling their own line of Far-East-made Ric copies under the name "Shaftesbury", and that's what Wyman's playing.
