Fender Princeton Chorus works best for me. It's solid state...but so is the Roland Jazz Chorus and that amp is right for Rics, too.

The amps I like are the Vox AC-30 (Handwired with Blue speakers are my favorites), '65 Fender Deluxe Reverb and '65 Fender Super Reverb, all are amps that work well for me with a Rickenbacker, are tube and get that great clean jangle and chime at low volumes and thick, creamy overdrive when turned up loud. I own a Deluxe and have played through two AC-30s (owned by SoCal forumites) and a Super. I also like Fender Twin Reverbs, and if I was an actively gigging musician, I'd probably be using that. But a lot of people tell me that the Deluxe is great for home use and the occasional small gig I do.

it's not the guitar, or the amp, it's the player.... well ok, maybe it's the guitar, I mean we're not all here because we all love potato salad right???
I have a Vox NT15 that I run through a fender 2X10 cab, a Vox AC4TVmini and a Kustom Double Barrel, all seem to do my 650C and 360/12 justice and none of my amps cost over $400.00

At home, I use an early '60s era Kustom K-200 roll'n'tuck through a pair of 15 inch speakers, whatever they used back in those days. Put a Jangle Box and a chorus pedal between the Rick and the amp, and that Kustom sounds pretty good. Loud, too.

The other amp I use on stage is a Music Man RD-110-Fifty, a poor man's Fender Princeton Reverb with a 10" Jensen speaker. I've written about both amps on the forum before.

I prefer my Music Man 210 HD 130 best. But my Ampeg VT 40 or the Vox Valvetronix aren't bad either.

Got a new one. I built this from a kit. Single EL34, single channel. Killer dynamics. Very hi-gain with 12AX7 preamp tubes, but cleans up wonderfully with guitar volume or pick attack. Takes pedals well. 10W... but it is very loud with the Celestion Century Vintage I have it paired up with. I just got to play my 660/12 through it and it jangles like no tomorrow, probably the best jangle I have ever played without any pedals between me and the amp. Simply rocks with hi gains or toasters. Have to be careful with the gain and master as it goes into very hi gain very quickly. Not a lot of clean headroom. Incredible for classic rock though. Really digging this one.

I built the chassis and had the Vox AC30CC1 cab lying around, so I built a light weight combo with it:

Phaez amps are also available completely assembled and in head cabs. They are hand wired, point to point at pretty reasonable cost. And they sound great. The kit was pretty easy to assemble and the schematics and instructions very clear.

Of the amps that I have, my Rics sound best through either a Traynor YCV20 WR or Silver Faced Deluxe Reverb.

I know you said an alternative to Vox but I'm very pleased with my AC30 VR.....Don't know what the classic all tube sounds like but I'm very pleased with my VR.

Now I'm new to this whole thing, but my Rickenbacker 12 going into my SF Twin Reverb is damn near unbeatable.
