3000/3001 Models

The 3000/3001 models have not been discussed much lately and a recent for sale ad drew my attention to these short scale models. What are your thoughts regarding the short scale Rickenbacker basses?

i pm`ed a seller of a 3000 in the "for sale",but he didn`t want to send it to england,he told me that international post was "problematic",god knows why!!!!

Last time I sent a guitar internationally turned into a two-month-long nightmare. Never again.

I believe the 3000 was short scale, but the 3001 was full scale (except possibly for a prototype). I played a MG 3000 or 3001 back in December 1980 for our HS production of Jesus Christ Superstar. It was borrowed from a friend of one of the keyboardists in the band. All he told me was that his friend had a Rick I could borrow for the two shows. I figured it was a 4001 and I was jacked. But the 3000-series loaner performed very well and the shows were excellent. About two weeks later I got my first bass, a JG 4001.

Yes thanks for the correction, John. It was the 3000 that was the short scale and 3001 prototype.

My love for the 3001 is pretty well documented around these parts. I prefer my 1978 3001 over either my 4001 or 4003. I've always said that is sounds like a p***ed off P-bass. The single pickup just sings & aside from the weight it's very comfortable to play. I've contributed a few shots to Paul Boyer for his upcoming book.
I hope he doesn't mind a teaser....

i like the lazer etched trees and hand with camera on the black pickguard !!! oh...oh...and the hand painted grass on the tail piece...masterfully done ! did paul w. do this great body of mods ???

I'm fortunate enough to have both. A mud-brown walnut 3001 which despite its horrid colour is a really great guitar and is one on my main players. It can be glimpsed/heard here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btj18ls4kJw

The 3000 is a nice MG bought from a forum member. Happy with the scale length but haven't quite sorted the sound/set up yet.Feel it's got less personality than its big brother, but will probably give it a run out soon.

I have a 3001..I love it.. Kicks butt in every way. Solid Bass that I thought should have been more popular with players and their wallets
