I guess I'm actually pretty lucky to have pedals that I know and trust - pedal GAS is dangerous because they seem more affordable than basses or amps, but they add up quickly!
Tell me about it - I never really used effects very much - over the last couple of years or so I've been properly bitten by the bug though! I reckon my current pedal board has cost me around £1500! and that includes the Akai Deep Impact which I got for a very good price - the residual value of those has gone absolutely crazy!!

It's not until you start totting up how much you've spent and then get to thinking that could be a nice stash of cash towards another Ric - I quite fancy a FG next to go along with my JG - one of the later one's as apparently the necks are a bit nicer/thinner? My 2004 neck is very much akin to a C radius P-Bass neck - quite chunky, especially when I think back to the neck on the 4001 I borrowed from my bass tutor - that was really slimline.

i use a boss gt10 guitar processor with my 4003 and get fantastic results, everything in one unit including fantastic tuner, amp models , cabinets, eq, compressor, chorus etc etc, i strongly recommend this unit it just sounds fantastic.

I have a couple of effects but rarely find them useful in a band setting. I like fooling around with them when I am practicing and get some unique tones but again, they haven't seemed to blend well. I have a Big muff and a Digitech bass synth wah.

I like the clean sound of just the bass and tweak the EQ when I need that modern tone.

BUT

I just got a new item a few weeks ago. I have not played by bass without it. it is the most useful effect I have ever used IMO.

its the Mark Bass Super Booster. it is a volume booster that runs independent if you need it for soloing and what I find amazing is the 2 other features...the VLE and VPF filters. these are on all Mark Bass amps and heads. It literally turned my B100R into another amp. it just makes it sound so smooth and silky. I can still get the clank but its not as pronounced as this pedal takes out the mids nicely.

this box is so good that I went to 2 different stores to try out the Mark Bass line. I am fairly certain that I will be buying a 102P soon. 300 Watts through 2 10's. I can get 500 if I run a cab. this amp is amazingly loud for its size, I am just finding it hard to justify a grand on an amp so small.
I could go Fender rumble 350 and used the super booster but there is something about that MArk Bass amp that is calling me :D

I've been gigging a Mark Bass F1 amp with 102P & 151P Traveler Cabs for around 2 years and cannot recommend highly enough just how good it is, prior to that I had a Trace Elliot AH350SMX & 2 Peavey 4X10 TX's - the Mark Bass rig is (IMHO) much better all round - the VLE and VPF filters are all I use regarding the EQ - the amp is set "neutral" and I just use those two filters to get the sound I want. I do use an Auralex Gramma pad too to isolate the cabs from the floor and also an SFX Micro Thumpinator - eliminates the subsonic frequencies that the ear cannot hear, your amp tries to amplify and the speakers cannot reproduce resulting in a much tighter bottom end/reduction in wasted energy by the amp and in particular speakers - it seemed logical to try and "protect" the cabs baring in mind the cost of them! Here's a link that'll demonstrate what I'm trying to get across!

The Previous rig was great but sooooo heavy - result - 4 broken discs in my lower back (ouch!)! :( I really wouldn't hesitate in shelling out the cash and buying one! :)

Sorry to hear about your back. that sucks...

I have not heard anyone say ANYTHING bad about the MB amps.

I must say, I am not a working musician. hell, I cant even play that well but I do have fun and I have been getting back into it and trying harder to become better. I basically play in the confines of my home and dont "need" 300 watts for jamming to my iPod....I have jammed with some people from time to time and by next year hope to be doing some sort of weekly jam session. I have an Ampeg B100R and its a great amp but at 100 watts its just keeps up with a Marshall halfstack and a hard hitting drummer. its good enough, but I cant spep on the gas and push it into overdrive...know what I mean?

a few years ago when I got the B100R I really had my heart set on a Fender bassman 100 with a 15. I got the Ampeg because I got a deal on it and it was $325 instead of 5 bills which is what they both went for at the time. I am not dissatisfied with the Ampeg.

Of all the amps I have tried recently the Fender Rumble and the MB 102P are the only 2 that I have really really liked. I even tried the Ampeg PF500 and wasnt wow'ed

so I am weighing my options---- Fender rumble 350 2X10 350 watts and some useful controls on the front, I plug the super booster into it and I got power and the filters of the MB for $500 or the MB 2X10 300 watts at $1150 and the I feel the only benefit is the size, weight and that I can line out to another cab for 500W total...that I dont have a use for and dont see happening

Anyone got a good way to simulate the slurpy bass sounds on "No Quarter" by led Zep? An early key bass synth? Anyone know what JPJ used on this track?

Pretty sure that's a Fender Rhodes with the tremolo on. There's also some bass pedals on there. You could simulate that a number of ways with a trem pedal, a phaser (set fast), or various Leslie simulators.

I know what you mean about headroom! I had my Trace/Peavey stack just to keep up with our guitarist's Mesa Boogie (MkIV IIRC), before the Peavey cabs I had Trace Elliot 4X10 & 1X15 but kept damaging the speakers trying to keep up with him! (We were a 3 piece power blues/rock trio).

I would think you're right, you know your situation better than anyone else, from what you've said the Fender Rumble sounds the most sensible option - you can always trade up if things change, but I know how hard it can be to trade down :(

A friend of mine covered No Quarter and used an Electro Harmonix Stereo Talking machine to achieve a passable result!?

http://www.ehx.com/products/stereo-talking-machine

May be worth a look? Certainly sounds like a Rhodes/Phaser as previosly mentioned

Here's the latest update of my board - shifted the wah off the board to free up some space and get my RAT back on board - though this is soon to be replaced with a Darkglass Electronics B3K 8), also have a Woolly Mammoth on it's way! 8) 8)

All wired up with George L's which IMHO makes for a much neater job!

Nice! what's that chorus pedal?

I've been looking to get a board up and running since I just joined a new experimental/doom/rock type band and I could really go nuts on the effects and build some cool soundscapes. I have a GT-10B right now but digital stuff is kinda meh for me. I'm going to get a bunch of individual pedals over the next few months and build a sweet pedalboard.

It's a custom build project by a friend of mine - it's pretty cool to look at as the baseplate lights up either red or yellow depending on which chorus voicing the pedal is set to & the eyes on the skull on the LHS flash/pulse red LED's  indicating what rate the chorus is set at - always a talking point! 8)

dude that is SICK! I want it haha. Is it just a modded circuit of an existing pedal?

I believe it's a clone of an EHX small clone chorus with a couple of mods thrown in - he does this as a bit of a hobby really - but he's bl00dy good at what he does!

Here's a link to UK Basschat thread discussing DIY Effects:

It's a bit long winded but if you've got time...he shows progress of the build step by step Page 25, and he's REALLY knowlegable with these things!

I asked him to build me a woolly mammoth clone - he's done it in around 4 days flat! There's soundclips here too!

Nice! I was planning on picking myself up an EHX neo clone for chorus. If it looked as awesome as that pedal I wouldn't mind going with a bigger pedal.
