60's Bass found, pickup original?

Post by Sprauge »

Hello,
I recently found a 60's Rickenbacker bass with unoriginal case and replaced pickup. The horseshoe retainer remains on the bass. What era is this other pickup? Is there a preferred pickup for the treble position? Thanks in advance for your shared knowledge on this subject.

Welcome to the forum. That looks a higain pickup in your first three pics, which could be any time from mid seventies to about late 80's. The treble (bridge) position would be correct for that pickup.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Yes that's the one! I purchased it from a lady who played in a rock band in the 80s, now wanted to purchase a nice flute. The big question is, what pickup should I put in there? Vintage correct preferred.

that understring higain needs to be unwound a few strands to re-connect the coil wire to the harness.

Does the thumb rest look original? Should I get a reissue pickup like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rickenbacker-ba ... 1c258f5394

or this:

I guess I only need the pickup only, not the surrounding fixture.

Congrats!

It looks like a Hofner diamond logo pickup under the horseshoe mags.

Nate, welcome and nice entrance!

The picture of the bass - are the shoes magnetic or the newer non-magnetic? Check with a paperclip. That will help determine advice. If they are magnetic, and I'm guessing they might be because of the surround, you can get a coil wound like what would have been in there by a couple forum members. If they are not magnetic, then a RIHS could be used with the surround on the bass now. But it will be wound hotter (11.4k vs around 7k) and will sound a bit different.

No, it should be Lucite. Pickguardian has repros, you just give 'em the screw spacing and they make it to order!

It's amazing, even the fingerpull is classy on a 4001...

A threading needle spun and stuck on the horse shoe cover, so its magnetic. Thanks for the advice.

The pickup wasn't in the shoes were they? The magnet to the pickup cold magnetize the shoes. You'd need to just measure the shoes themselves.
