Brian, I was just commenting on the group. I just listened to the 9 songs of theirs I have here on the notebook and I believe it is pretty evenly divided between a Jazz and a Rick. I'll say Childhood's End from Misplaced Childhood and Few Words for the Dead from Radiation are a Rick.harrek wrote:Not all of it is. Certainly alot less of the recent music. And, the cover of that album is exactly how Genesis looked! we were all screaming for "More masks!!!" No one had ever seen anything like this before.

Bit of an unusual one this, but I just love anything on the New Clear Days album by The Vapors, that guy really knew how to make a bass line stand out

John, I'm agreeing! Just giving my 2 cents worth when I saw them way back then for the Script tour. And as we well know, what is used in the studio can often be different than what they use live (Sir Paul being an example having set the Rick aside live). I'm also not good at picking out what instrument is what unless it's fairly obvious. So I trust and value your and other members ears in these areas. I just think that Pete is an often looked over and very talented bass player who has used a Rickenbacker for some of his work. I know I still enjoy going back and listening to their Fish era music and have great memories of seeing them live a few times.johnallg wrote:Brian, I was just commenting on the group. No comment on content but Ned's Atomic Dustbin from the 90's has a distinctive pick'd Rick tone and I sought out a CD of theirs just for that. Unique band as having two bass players with Alex Griffen on lead bass using a 4001.

Now for something completely different! I love all these examples, and have nearly all the lps and cds. But I also have a love the unsung Ric players who went for a less aggressive and more 'standard' bass sound (very subjective I know!) So when I yearn for that sound I play any 10cc with Graham Gouldman on bass. All of the 'The Original Soundtrack' and 'How Dare You' bass sounds are just nice fat round sounds using the original flats. Just beautiful to my old ears...

You sure about that, Ronbo? The March '72 video is the JG 4001 as is the Hofstra show from Spring '73. DId he get a Jazz while the 4001(s) were having the Jazz-bass pickups installed? Or is that what you mean by a Jazz bass?
