Hard to tell what it is, even whether it's a Fender or a Rick, but the photographs on the Made in Japan jacket were not taken in Japan, they were taken at the Rainbow Theatre in June of '72. The picture inside the gatefold is clearly the JG 4001 (I'm not sure where those were taken; possibly even earlier in '72).

I think the DP Machine Head and Rush Hemispheres are most representative. I've played them so much through the years I stopped listening to 'em so please keep the ideas coming.

My earlier post prompted a revisit to Yes-BBC Sessions and I have to say this may be my new/old 4001 go-to track. Loved this Beatles cover and the fact the Peter Banks got tons of non-traditional Ric tones out his RM 1997, but Squire’s RM 1999 is emblematic of that freight train drive that soon would become the 4001’s domain. Not so much apparent on the laptop, but killer on the CD. …the louder, the better!

Funny you should say that. There's been a fair bit of conjecture over the years as to why Bruford did indeed leave Yes for Crimson. It's fairly well documented on the internet these days, but Bruford went from one controlling situation to another. I think the difference was that he was good enough to let Fripp's demands roll off his back. He saw a future with Crimson that had no bounds. Only problem was, he couldn't make the decision to keep them together. I've long held that of all the rock drummers, Bruford would be the one I'd want to play with most.

Just realized no one has posted on Chris Brubeck. He may be one of the most talented players out there that wields a Ric bass. "Triple Play" (with Joel Brown and Madcat Ruth) and "Classified" (Brubeck Brothers) are good examples with bucketloads of prominent, well-delivered bass (and some good vocal improv from Chris too). The man has more talent in each finger than I do in both hands!
