The board was stained Ken.
Re: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH!
I certainly do remember the discussion about this bass. Who could forget this bass, and those "fingerboard dots" up by the nut.
Re: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH!
Tony and I went back & forth quite a bit over that fretboard. Note the two markers at the first fret... ? ? ? ? ? I think this fretboard is a replacement for whatever used to be there.

My vote for Funniest Post Of The Year, or possibly of the RRF.fran4001 wrote:Beautiful piece of wood! Can't wait to see it all gussied up. Love the bathtub 'laboratory' too! You're either A: a bachelor, B: have a tub in your workshop or C: have a VERY cool wife! If I tried that in the house I'd be laying face-down in the front yard with that Ric sticking out of my nether regions....![]()

I hope the black didn't make it into that wonderful maple. Lovely birdseye and flaming. The back of the neck with a FireGlo on it will be stunning. It would be really nice if you could sand the fretboard enough to get the rosewood back. Great score Tony.

Glad to make ya chuckle John! I guess the element of truth is what makes it a bit funny. I was being more than a little serious.

Re: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH!
Thanks John! The bass is now in the hands of Curt Wilson. He's confident that he'll be able to remove all of the black paint. He did a beautiful Fireglo on a black re-fin 330 (maybe it was an RM 1998?) that to me looked un-reversible. It was discussed here, but I can't find the thread.johnallg wrote:I hope the black didn't make it into that wonderful maple. Lovely birdseye and flaming. Most of the stain on the fretboard has been lifted...but I don't know if it can be salvaged. It may be getting a new Bubinga board.
I can't wait to see the finished job, which should take in the 3 month range.

Was the fretboard replaced?
