Indeed....... But I can tell you there is a better chance of me finding a $400 Ric or you finding $.15 a gallon gas than there is of me forking out $300 for a Tolex case. And I REALLY like Tolex cases! ;0)

Read this post from John Hall... bottom line: the SKB type case is more sturdy than the vintage type.

Well, i've seen SKB cases crack apart....can't say i've seen even a 50 year old Victoria/G&G "Vintage" type do that.

I didn't get the impression that JH said the SKB cases were sturdier that the vintage, just that they provide more protection. With the form-fitting interior, that is believable. Guitars can move around a bit in the vintage style, which can cause issues.

On the other hand, some of the form fitting SKB cases, at least those for basses, seem to have something under the padding that can dent the edge of the instrument. I've heard several stories about this, and experienced it personally with one of mine, brand spankin' new from a dealer, who confirmed he had just opened the box for the first time when he took pictures to send to me (so, no customer mishaps there):

The dealer did, however, send it to me without the thin foam sheet that is wrapped around the body from the factory, so perhaps that would have prevented this. But then again, I probably wouldn't keep it in there under normal circumstances either...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Next time you visit, we'll show you the damaged cases rack and make a believer out of you. I will concede that the feet of the SKB's are more delicate, however, SKB has done some work to beef that area up. The case sizes on some models have also been increased recently to add more padding between the instrument and the valance.

The vintage cases don't provide as much crush protection, partly because the valance isn't interlocking and partly because the sides and the tops have a seam that pops.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I can have either case I want for my instruments (I know someone!) and the majority of them are in SKB's.

Yeah, I can have any case I want too, and most of mine are in vintage cases - 'cause I like 'em. Guess I'm just old fashioned.

But if I were back "in the business" and playing/travelling a lot, I'd do what we did back then and put 'em in actual flight cases (Anvil was the big name "back in the day"). Yeah, they ain't cheap, but if you want stuff protected, they're pretty hard to beat...

Whoah..... very nice. I just want to make it clear, I think that the SKB's are far better at protecting the instrument. If I were shipping my expensive instruments regularly....they would be in the SKB style. As a fan of great American made instruments and a very nostalgic person....I prefer the Tolex cases and the Silver Rickenbacker are the nicest I have ever seen. I have one for my Mapleglo and will be ordering another for my Jetglo.

It is the sign of a great company when the gentleman who runs the company openly discusses and interacts with his clients. Thank you for what you all do Mr. Hall.
