MAD...VERY VERY MAD...YES. FURIOUS...PLS READ

Post by leftybass »

Alright.

I do not know what lesson is to be learned from this, but somehow it just seems so wrong to witness what I am seeing on ebay....Total BULL S****...

I sold my Jetglo 1967 950 #GD1993 last year to a guy in Texas who has had some nice Rickenbackers over the years. Some of you have handled this guitar and have agreed that it was in near-new, under-the-bed original condition, which it was...simply one of the best 60's 950s in existance. The guy I sold it to was very happy with it and it's condition. It really was a case-queen.

For some reason, he had to sell it about 2-3 weeks ago for reasons unknown to me...oh well, things like this happen to most of us from time to time and we have to part with a piece or two.

Well, I nearly threw up on my computer tonight when I find the guitar in about 4 or 5 different listings on eBay, parted out.

I simply can't believe that anyone with an ounce of common sense would part out a rare, minty vintage guitar thinking it's worth more in parts than it was as a whole instrument. Suffice to say, I am ROYALLY ****** OFF.

Who is this 'Gibsondependable' on eBay..?? If you're on here, then directly, how could you be this stupid..?!?!?!??? WTF>>>???????

If I knew that this was going to be in the future for this or ANY Rickenbacker I have ever owned, I'd have held on the each and every one.

This has got to be one of the most effing bone-headed things I have ever seen. What a crock of ****.

John, this is pure heartache and I am very sorry to hear this.

Let us hope that some how the pieces are gathered up and it can be reassembled in some way.

There is a growing database of butchered Rickenbackers in the Register that reminds us that greed often time trumps common sense.

Here's hoping that something good is possible from this horrible situation. Perhaps the seller would consider selling all the pieces to one person.

Yes it is sad when a vintage one gets parted out like this...

Just from his pricing it would be more then $1500 to reassemble it all again...

He has also butchered two 360s from 2002 this week.

If a Rickenbacker sells cheaply on Ebay it is often to this guy... It must be a lucrative business I suppose. :( :( :(

Sorry to hear that this happened to one of your guitars

I sold it for $1550 last year, and it sold again for $1225 about 2-3 weeks ago.

Peter is correct in that we vigorously track this info in the register... The list of butchered RICS gets longer every week sadly. :( :(

The seller hides the SN info - but it can often be figured out by looking at pictures of the cavity and by checking completed Ebay listings.

In order for it to make business sense - he must win cheaper auctions I suppose.

John, I completely understand why this is driving you nuts. It's not too unlike sending product that were once American made to be made in China for the fraction of the cost and then still keep the same selling price. Once again, greed triumphs over good.

Yeah, he's basically known as "The Jersey Butcher" 'round these parts. Sad, but that seems to be his whole interest in just about any sort of guitar...

It drives me nuts what he does to perfectly good Les Paul's too. Aside from the obvious, some serious mojo probably gets lost as a result of parting out certain older and in some cases..........vintage instruments.

There's an arbitrage out there - the constituent parts are worth more than the whole guitar, so someone who has no emotional attachment to the instruments is taking advantage of the arbitrage to make some cash. It's akin to melting down jewellery or corporate raiding. The emotional investment people have in the "whole" item (guitar, ring, business) is extinguished as the item is transformed into cash for the benefit of the arbitrageur.

This practice will only stop if the arbitrage closes up.... To an extent, when people like us chase vintage parts to keep our beloved instruments "period correct", we are helping fuel the arbitrage and hence the practice of parting instruments out.

Philosophical distance aside, the guy is a ******* and I blew the whistle on him back in '09, I think it was.

Absolutely NO scruples, as my experiences illustrate.
