What was Ringo doing from 1984-1988, when he wasn't playing music? Telling stories for Thomas the Tank Engine! How many of your kids liked Thomas? I was a huge fan of it when I was younger, and still have a soft spot for it today.

Thomas the Tank Engine is underrated. It is one of the greatest series of childrens' stories, all teaching positive life lessons. The series was started in 1945 by an English vicar, the Reverend Wilbert Awdry, telling bedtime stories to his ill son. As he told them over time, he had to keep notes to keep the characters and the continuity straight.

His wife gathered up his notes and sent them to her cousin, a publisher, who hired an illustrator and turned them into a book. Seeing the success, he continued to write and publish one per year into the 1970's.

Ringo probably would have read, or had read to him, some of the early books.

Now, let's all be really useful engines so our Fat Controller can call each of us the "Pride of the Line"!

Our kids were at the right age at that time, and we enjoyed watching Shining Time Station (as is was called in the U.S.) together. We could accept Ringo as The Conductor but were in for quite the surprise when he was replaced by the obviously-family-friendly choice of George Carlin!

But it's alright, because Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon, and now even Pierce Brosnan have all narrated. And George Carlin was on his best behaviour for his episodes.

That might be true, but it was hard to disassociate his regular output from the kiddie material.

Kind of like listening to Eminem do children's lullabies.
Or watching Gene Simmons lecture on abstinence.
Or reading a book by Pamela Anderson on how teenage girls should dress modestly.

I'm sure you get my point!
