Deep Purple - Highway Star (Isolated Rhythm Section)
I don't know if anyone has posted this here before. It makes you realise how much of the character and overall sound in the mix was coming from Glover's bass.
Re: Deep Purple - Highway Star (Isolated Rhythm Section)
Wow certainly more than I thought. Wonder if that's the Jazz pickup bass.
Re: Deep Purple - Highway Star (Isolated Rhythm Section)
I think this is with the original pickups. Certainly sounds like it to me. Others will correct me if I'm wrong.

That is the Ric, with Roto's, unmodified.
The sound is... well, the epitome of Ric tone, IMHO.
First time I hear the isolated track, thanks for the link! He does stuff there I wasn't aware of until now.

Saw them in Halifax in February...
Let's say that his Vigier bass did not sound at all like that !!
Actually, his bass tone was pretty thin sounding to my ears...

Thanks for posting. That was very enlightening. The performance and tone are still relevant 41 years after the recording.

Funny thing, I can nail that sound with my '86 Shadow, but not my '73, only two years younger than Glover's.

WOW, GREAT!!! You can hear every note clearly. Yeah, lots of cool stuff happening there that I never heard. I'll be learning this.
BTW, this is one of my favorite hard rock songs of all time. It still pumps me up the same way that it did when I first heard it in the early '70s!
I'M A HIGHWAY STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!! YEAH!!!

Perhaps as the 73's had the Stripe, I know my early 72 is really a hard/harsh sounding bass.ilan wrote:Funny thing, I can nail that sound with my '86 Shadow, but not my '73, only two years younger than Glover's.

Funny you mention it Ilan, my 86 Shadow is one of my more "growly" basses right out of he box. it's got a ton of attitude and tone, more so than many of my Rickenbackers.ilan wrote:Funny thing, I can nail that sound with my '86 Shadow, but not my '73, only two years younger than Glover's.
I love hearing Glover's bass line uncovered in the this song. You are right, he is going fills and flairs I never heard in the complete version.
Awesome!!

JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!
Re: Deep Purple - Highway Star (Isolated Rhythm Section)
The bass lines are absolutely out of this world !!! Never thought there was so much in that song !!!
This is great !!! I tell you, the Vigier matched with the TC Electronics rig did not sound like that when I saw him recently !!! And, I had very good seats to get a good grasp out of the bass sound and volume !
