I prefer the newer rics to the old ones ... give me a 1986 or later ric ... why?
-The necks are stronger
-The truss rods won't pop off a fret board
-You can put any strings you want on them
-No capaciter to take out
-The pickups are loud and hot enough to sound modern
-less fret ware less body dings less yellowing
and I especially like the 60's shape headstock and 60's shape body wings of the 1998 and later 4003 basses
And the number one reason I like the newer 1986 and later rics is ... I can add a low B string

Speaking of that, have you guys seen this? There was another listed a week or so ago. I think JR snapped it up.

cody, i have a 2001 4003. every guy who had a 4001 says mine feels better and plays better than theirs ever did.
i dont know , the only other ric i ever played was a white 77 4001 back in 79 when i started playing. it was what made me want one.
they say the late 80`s 4003`s had bugs. they say the 4001`s truss rods were hard to adjust properly.
again i dont know.
i do know the neck on my 4003 was adjusted to my liking once in 2001 when i got it, and its never been touched again. it rarely goes out of tune after sitting either. after playing it hard, it barely goes out of tune.
mine was so fresh from the factory it took 6 months for the paint smell to go away, i wish you luck with the new toy
rock on!

Jeff,
Was there a big difference between '97 and ;98? I have a '97 that looks to have the large 60's headstock; if there is a difference I never knew and hey I learned something today!
Thanks,
-Dave
