Firstly can I say I have read so much useful advice on here from genuine experts who are friendly enough to offer free advice and help that I have decided to tackle my own mini project.
Guys I need your advice please. I dearly love my 4001 lefty. However I am a bit of a perfectionist and need to sort it out. I have a couple of questions that I have tried looking through the search utilities for , but theres so much info my eyes go funny ;0)
I have taken the TRC off the headstock as I wanted to bring the neck back straighter as the bass is not as easy to play as my 4003, and when I removed the TRC I discovered that the nuts have been tightened into the little crossbar, which looks like a bit of aluminium. The crossbar is not square in the headstock either and one rod is pulled up a good 2 mil on the other one..Neither rod is sitting square against the bar, one rod end is angled outwards into the TRC and the other is resting against the headstock routing Primarily can I just "force undo" the nuts, which are tight to turn as they have milled themselves into the crossbar. Once Ive got them undone I thought I would take the rods out and have a looksee whats going on in there. So do I take the rods out from the body end of the bass? Can you heat and straighten these things, or is it a case of a redesign, ie chopping off the iffy bit and reinstalling with a shorter rod than originally, if you get my drift. Do I just find a bit of old Ali from somewhere and manufacture a new crossbar, seeing as this one has been milled out by the nuts on the rods, and is probably unserviceable
I do apologise if these questions have been asked before but I did try and find all the info I need first!
Finally I need to get a new nut (as in a nut nut as opposed to a trussrod nut) and then cut it. Does anyone have a preference on materials they use, and if in the UK a supplier.
I apologise but this thread is likely to leap into life every now and then as I am a bass player, not a luthier, but it look me years to get a Lefty 4001 and I trust myself more, with you experts advising me, than the local music shops "luthier".
I look forward to the benefit of your hard earned knowledge, and will update you as I attempt what I personally think is a really scary task for a person with zero prior experience on setups and repairs! Maybe I should have bought an old junker to practise on first!
Look forward to more questions on the ultimate setup once Ive got the "pull it apart bit" out of the way. BTW thks for those that gave me the UK refinishing places.

Mark , the contacts I have got at home so when I get there I will mail them to you. One quote I do remember for a refinish was 400 quid!!!!!!
Jeff thankyou for your heads up on Mike Parks who I have now contacted. Somehow my order expanded into new machine heads, a complete screwkit for the whole bass, a trussrod wrench and various other kit.
Owen, cheers for the mails, you are a star and no mistake. Thks to all for your time!
