Help w/ my Special Edition Rick...?..?

Post by Katchagirl »

Hi all,

New forum member here :D I have recently picked my basses back up after about an 18 year hiatus (YES - I KNOW, WTF?? LOL).

I have 3 Ricks that I have held onto and, even tho didn't play much during the hiatus, still cherished and kept in their cases. I know that one of them was supposedly 1 of 1,000 only made, but I cannot find a picture/info on it ANYWHERE! I'm sooo curious to find out about it, so thought I'd try to post a few pics and see if anyone can help.

Please let me know and sorry for the finger smudges on the images.

UPDATE: Ok, so, now, it appears that it wasn't 1 of 1,000 but 1 of 50!!?? I looked and the serial number is ZK 3197. So from my brief reading, it is a 1986 Shadow, 1 of 50 made... Does this sound accurate to ya'll? I'm soo freakin' excited to find this out!! I knew it was "supposedly" rare, but... really? 1 of 50!?!??? :D

Welcome Katherine. Great looking Shadow you have. Also to searching the forums, at the upper right click on Rickenbacker Register and when there do an advanced search for Shadows and you can see all that are registered and also get pricing for them. You'll be pleased.

You can add your 3 to the registry and pics of them also.

Yep, that's a Shadow, alright. It's not clear if they made 50 or 60 in 1986. They were specially made for Guitar Center, but when I asked Rickenbacker CEO John Hall about why Guitar Center wanted them, he didn't clearly recall what the occasion was. I've heard stories about the special order to commemorate the opening of their 50th store (or 60th store), or it might have been some special anniversary for them. Anyway, Hall suggested I ask the folks at Guitar Center what it was all about. I didn't bother, figuring there wouldn't be anyone who could chase down paperwork on a special order from 26 years ago.

Shadows are great basses and command premium prices when available. They have really thin necks compared with most other Ricks, and they look killer, of course. Enjoy your collectible, and welcome to the RRF!

Katherine,

Nice bass! As many have stated here, it's a Shadow and typically, Shadow's are exceptionally fine examples of Rickenbacker tone and playability. My Shadow is one of my favorite Rickenbackers!
