Good bit of info, this... was wondering why the jackplate on my '78 4001 had a serial number but no Normal/R-O-S lettering... (RG 4236)

The serial numbers (and/or letters) are stamped into the jackplate. The "Normal" and "Rick-O-Sound" lettering is tampo applied (or possibly silk-screened) ink that wears off with time.
