NGD: 1961 365 "New Capri"

Post by collin »

I received a new additon from Oyama Katsuyuki in Japan this week, had to share -- this guitar is amazing. :D :

(color got kind of messed up in this photo...it's not that bright in person).

Image
(Check out the difference in Fireglo shade between the '61 and the '64 Rose Morris...that's only three years apart! )

Plus -- a massive shout-out of appreciation to Eddie Davis (K43rover) for his help in getting the other new addition this week - the mid-70s Marshall Lead & Bass 50 Combo pictured above. Not only did he help by boxing it up and shipping it across the world, but he drove an hour each way to London to help pick it up in person for me. Huge thanks Ed, I can't wait to play it!

(note: These hard-to-find amps are Paul Weller's combo of choice since the late Jam era - tone for days! 8) ).

Congrats, Collin!

I'm a big fan of the early "New Capris," having the body shape -- new for 1961 -- which ultimately became the "Harrison" or "double bound" body shape, as well as that of the standard 330/1997RM. Yours is part of the early batch that were produced in mid-1961. The photo of the 365 New Capri on the cover of the Rittor Music book, which happens to be few serial nos. away from yours, inspired me to get one years ago.

These are rare birds and iconic Ricks. And with the Capri style thin neck and the then new 1.5" thinline body, they are great playing guitars.

Here are a few from 1961 listed in the Register:

So what's the story? Trades outright purchase, sell your soul? C'mon, inquiring minds want to know!

Beautiful instruments. The difference in shading and in the colour of the fireglo finish are but a couple of reasons that the Rickenbacker history so interesting.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I think the mini-collection is almost complete (cough, cough..).

Thanks Ron, they are a strange mix of real early Rick features and classic 60's Rick shapes.

Do we know the serial number on the Rittor book guitar? Can we assume it's still in Japan? Mine is the first one listed in the register there, guess I need to update the location!

The neck on this one isn't as thin as my '69 381, but slightly thinner than my '64 1998. Nice shape, overall.

Thanks! Quality over quantity, I guess. :)
