Mike Campbell's Redneck S8

Post by stanislav »

Rolling Stone has posted some of The Guitars Documentary with Mike Campbell. In Chapter 6, he talks about guitars, but the Redneck S8 is sitting just behind him. Maybe he will show it more in upcoming episodes.

Here you go:

Notice he had removed the octave strings, though.

I'd like to know if there were any recordings that this S/8 was used on.

The bass has been around since 1987. And this picture from 1988 shows that it was present during the Full Moon Fever sessions. Tom and Mike like no treble end whatsoever on a bass, despite the fact that about 90% of their basslines use picks, so if the bass was used as an 8, it isn't that noticeable.

Ok.......I will probably sound like an idiot for this, but........the sound of an 8-string bass would not fit in on ANY of the songs on Full Moon Fever.

So, WHY bring one???? With ALL the guitars they have....why not use a bass with a more appropriate sound???
Is this why Mike removed the octave strings???

In the most recent episode on the webote, the bass appears to be strung only as a 4 string.

Which is why my '73 4001 may get flatwounds on it soon. Call me cheap, but I hate to spend that crazy amount of money on a set of TI's or an other strings! A pick? Well on some songs. I'm terrible with a pick on a bass guitar!

I thought watching Francesco's Beatle covers helped?

It did help my picking technique, but I'm nowhere as good with a pick as Francesco! I even play my 8 and 12 string basses fingerstyle!
